Oh, Hec, what a lovely tribute to your dad. And to baseball, and your whole family.

My 16-yo niece is a catcher, and I think she's happiest on the softball field--or at an As game.

Thank you. Your niece reminds me - in a way - of a quote from Keith Hernandez, a famously clutch hitter. He had a difficult childhood with his demanding father, and baseball became a safe haven for him. A place where he could give all his focus and feel safe. So he never felt any pressure in a game. May we all find such safe havens.

Thank you, Sumi. Hey, last I checked both the White Sox and Cubs were both in first.

A beautifully-written, and beautiful, homage. Thank you for posting it (especially with pictures! The joy in Matilda's face is just so lovely.).

I was just looking at the video we took of you playing with much-babier Matilda. So freakin' cute! (both of you)

We have to take special care to appreciate her joyfulness right now, because she's a full on two year old fusspot supreme.

I'm so sorry about your Dad, David. I really loved reading this; it's a beautiful tribute to your Dad and to your family. The picture of him doing his clown act is amazing!

Thank you. I've got another picture of him doing his clown act, I'll share with you via email. Notable (for among other things) showing no children screaming in horror at his clownface, but all rather giddy with laughter.
