Weekend Baseball Recap

We had a busy baseball weekend, with practice on Friday and games on Saturday and Sunday.

I missed the practice because (a) it was starting to rain and (b) it wasn't my Friday night to go over to the East Bay to collect Emmett. So, I bailed and then it stopped raining and they had practice anyway. Minor twinge of guilt over missing that practice, ( Read more... )

Is it possible Ellen's family took a weekend trip and forgot to call?

Glad Emmett seems to be rebounding from the nose so well.

Tim will be checking in with Ellen's family, but her fear of the ball just seemed to increase exponentially after the black eye. She refused to even play first base during infield warmups - things like that. When she got hit at the plate it wasn't that hard or bad (upper shoulder, which is meaty and hurts, but not like getting nailed in the elbow or knee) - but it shocked and scared her some more, reinforcing the fear.

Ellen is playing soccer concurrently and at some point she'd have to choose between baseball and soccer anyway. So I think she'll still play sports. And she might switch to softball which is also an option for this league.

It just feels like I let her down a little bit, not addresing the fear earlier. But she seemed to come back okay after the black eye, so we didn't realize the fear was building rather than receding.

Just wanted you to know that, though my understanding of baseball taps out at "Sometimes you catch the ball, sometimes it rains," I really enjoy your accounts of coaching and etc.
Sometimes I wonder what I missed, not being able to compete like that.(My brief forays into Special sports being Personal Bests when even I could tell my personal best was NFG.)

As I discussed with Kristin and ND when they were in town, most of what I'm getting from coaching is an insight into teaching. The difficulty in transferring knowledge and skill, but the rewards when you see a kid blossom in confidence and ability. I was unseemly excited when Ellen hit her double (I was coach-pitching at the time, and it almost took my head off), and when Nathan threw out the runner at first from the outfield. Which I'm a little worried looks like "Yay We Win!" super competitive coach guy, but was really all about "Wow, So Proud Of You!"

I think you underestimate your personal bests, or just weren't entered into the proper events. I'm certain you'd win at Highest Blood Pressure While Listening To A Republican Blowhard, or Most Smartass Mouth In Arizona Crip-Power Movement, or Prettiest Fingers Typing Bloodiest Stories.
