So my brother just called me up and told me that I'm not eligible to be a godparent for either of my nephews because I'm not in good standing with the church. Something about getting married without a dispensation to marry outside the faith ( Read more... )

That seems awfully cruel. I'll do everything I can to help you if you want to pursue some means to fix this. Do you want to try and get a retroactive dispensation? If such a thing exists?

The Catholic Church does annulments so people can say they were never married rather than divorced, so I wouldn't be surprised if something like this were possible. I don't know if there is such a thing, though.

Maybe oyu can be a cthulhuparent to the kids instead?

True, but the requirements to qualify for an annulment are quite strict. Not so w/ divorce.

Yeah, but there is NO WAY IN HELL that I would ever submit to something that sez I never got married. There's probably some mechanic or another that involves getting a dispensation and then having a second ceremony or somethingorother... but I'm feeling kinda bitter at the catholic church right now, and am tempted to just say "fuck 'em" (the church, not my family)

Now then... cthulhuparent, you say? I like the sound of that...

Wow. I think some churches (or clergy members) are just more strict than others. My sister-in-law was able to be Godmother to my niece (at a Catholic baptism), and she isn't even Catholic. When I became Godmother to my nephew no one asked me anything.

Definitely, depends on the church and who's in charge at the time.

I know in my home town their was a series of things that had to be accomplished, but they started relaxing the standards when they realized how much more difficult they were making it to bring people in.
