i liked the progression of this story and the ending was a nice surprise. Mai is spectacular, as she deserves to be. really nice.

In my estimation, the role of spymaster always seemed a natural fit for Mai. Everything about her was low-key and hidden, to the point where, when she fought off half the boiling rock guards, my reaction was "Holy crap, she could do that all this time!?"

And while Zuko is one of my favorite characters, he has the cloak-and-dagger instincts of a stoned walrus. Actually, I think that's one of the reasons I like him.

This is a very good fic. You do a great job of writing combat, and Xian's anger is so real in this. And Mai is absolutely awesome.
