*Raises hand*

"The MHRA says there is no evidence that such multi-ingredient medicines are of any benefit to the under-twos."

It's not that the risk is 'too high'- it's that any risk is not justified by the non-existent benefit.

'MHRA pulls ineffective product off shelves' doesn't sell as many newspapers as 'OMG Nanny State!!!!111one'.

But there isn't any evidence that they are helpful for over two's either, or it would have already been quoted (to good an advertising boost to miss), yet they are still going to be sold for them.

What gets me most is:

"There have been concerns in the US over such medicines after parents gave children too high a dose, or more than one product containing the same ingredients.

There have also been some similar reports in the UK."As in: there are some American parents that are idiots and don't read the instructions, there might be some UK parents that do the same, so we are going to distrust ALL UK parents and remove from them the dangers of having to think and make decisions and take responsibilities and stuff like that ( ... )

You don't think withdrawing an ineffective medicine is a good idea? Or Wouldn't going farther with the withdrawal be even more 'nanny state'ish ( ... )

I think we need to remember that a 'Nanny State' has a light side and a dark side. While moderation in all things is generally a good thing there can be times when actions undertaken by the state in protection of children can go disastrously wrong, i.e. the 'Satanic abuse' of children that was alledged in Orkney.

How many times has govt or you and I asked for expert opinion and then completely ignored it? Too many, but that is the nature of politics and Life; Caught between the Light and the Dark.
