“That’s it Eunsook. This is too much. What else do you want to sacrifice? You’ve missed our daughter birthday. You’ve also missed our son spelling bee competition. The competition that he prepared for months, the competition that you promised to watch! And now you spent our anniversary by working all night. What next Eunsook? Tell me, what next?” Kibum yelled his frustration to his wife.
This was not their first argument. But most of their argument started with Kibum’s complaint about his wife’s chosen career; the one that Eunsook proudly labored for years to achieve what she had now. She was the youngest VP on her office. As the youngest one, people tended to underestimate her, so for years she had to prove that she had the capability as age or gender were not the obstacles.
“Don’t start with me Kibum. You know this is the busiest season on my office. You know for years, I can’t avoid spending long hours at these months.” Eunsook could not hold her vexation. Being one of the top on her office sometime influenced her authoritative manner at the house. She was a woman with power after all. “We’ve been talking this for years when you decided to pursue a better career so I have to stay at this company. You said, at least one of us should have a stable career. Now I have the stable career.”
“But I also have a stable career now. Why aren’t you slowing down?” Kibum grabbed his hairs, frustrated on his wife ego.
“I’ve studied for years; I labored my ass for years to achieve this Kibum. This is what I dreamt when I prepared my career. Now I achieved, you asked me to slow down? Why don’t you slow down?” Eunsook yelled back. Yes, she was a wife. Yes, she was a mom. But didn’t we live at the time that marriage mean equalization between men and women? Didn’t parents should be meant father and mother as a team? If Kibum could pursue his career, why couldn’t she? If she had to be there for her children, where was Kibum at that time?
“So what next? Do you give up on me, Eunsook? Do you give up on this family? Tell me what do you want?”
“Why did you always push me to be the one who'll make the decision? Why didn’t you make one?” Eunsook knew where this conversation led. Kibum wanted her to sacrifice her career. To hell, she won’t let it happen.
“You asked me? I want you to quit your damn job!” Kibum challenged his wife. His eyes looked fiercely at his wife. He got sick and tired on all Eunsook's excuses and on how she always let her job be above their family.
“Then I won’t. You know, I won’t do it!” Eunsook starred back.
“Then I’ll give up.” Kibum turned his face and started to leave.
“What do you mean by give-up? Do you leave me?” Eunsook couldn’t believe Kibum just decided to leave. Leave her and the children? What were his husband thinking of?
“But you've given-up on us years ago, Eunsook,” slowly Kibum turned his heels but kept his eyes to the floor. Somehow, he couldn’t see his wife’s eyes. It’s too painful. The eyes that flowering his dreams when they’re on their dating era; the eyes that showering him with love through their marriage's hardship. They have a lot of things now, they're financially free; money should be not the issue anymore. However, when they started their family, their struggled with necessity; decided between paying routine monthly bills and fixing the leaking roof; bought a better brand of milk and pampers by deducing their lunch allowance. They struggled once, but they did it together. They did it as family. Now that they had achieved their financial freedom, somehow their career slowly had eaten their family. Their family luxurious boat started to sink as there’re two captains with different destinations.
“I am not giving up,” Eunsook yelled. “I just need you to understand my needs.”
“But what about our kids needs? What about my needs? What about this family’s needs? What will you do if this family’s needs are different with yours? What will you do Eunsook? Because I am not sure anymore if we’re doing this for the family’s sake or for our own selfish reason.” Kibum leaved her with that.
Eunsook sat and started to cry. Why does everything have to be so complicated? Why does marriage never like what she read on her fairy tale books. Why isn't her marriage succeed like what she'd planned? Why can't her family be happy on her happiness?
“Mommy, are you okay?” A little hand wiped her tears.
Eunsook looked at a mini feminine version of Kibum . She hugged her daughter tightly and said, “I am okay darling, I am okay.”
“Mommy, where did daddy go?” The little girl looked at her with sad eyes. Eunsook felt guilty because she knew her daughter had heard their arguments.
“Oh, he just needs something, honey. He will back soon.” Eunsook really hoped that Kibum would back soon. She lived with him for so long, how should she manage to live without him now?
“Are you mad with him, mommy?” Her daughter question stabbed her heart. Did she mad with Kibum? Yes, she mad because Kibum didn't want to understand her needs; because Kibum leaved her; because Kibum's words made her felt guilty.
“No… I am not honey,” she lied.
“Is daddy mad with you?”
'Did you mad with me Kibum? Did you regret your decision to marry me?' Eunsook bitterly thought. If Kibum regretted marry her, then they couldn't keep this marriage going then. Should they divorce? Was it something she wants?
"No, honey.” Eunsook knew it’s bad to lie but she couldn’t help it.
“But you yelled to each other.” Her daughter looked into her eyes with worried tears glistening her eyes. “I don’t want daddy to leave. If… if… it’s because of my birthday, it’s okay mommy. I can have my birthday without you. You can go mommy. I can celebrate it with my friends.”
“It’s not you, baby, or your brother. It’s … me!” Something hit Eunsook’s heart when she looked at her daughter. What did she work for? What was her first goal when she decided to work? Was it just for herself? No. She had to admit that family’s necessities were the reason at the first place. So if they had all the wealth to fulfill everybody needs, was it mean it's her time to stop? But she loved her work.
Eunsook kept on struggling within herself. Did she love her works or she simply loved working? Because if she loved working, she could always find other jobs; jobs which gave her the satisfaction of working but with enough time for her family; jobs which pay lesser but brought happiness to everybody.
Eunsook looked on her girl’s waiting face. This was her dream when she started this family with Kibum. But somehow, her selfishness carried her away. She was Eusook, a career woman; but she was also a wife and a mother. That came in a package called marriage; it’s all on her job descriptions when she vowed her commitment before the altar.
“You know what, baby; you always want a girl’s day out with me, right? Tell you what, let’s do it tomorrow.” Eunsook smiled sweetly to her daughter while holding her daughter's little cheeks with both her hands. God was so good with her, even she didn't have enough time for her angels, somehow they manage to grow to be good kids. But she knew, being a parent was not about good luck. She needed to love and teach them. Being a parent was an active actions.
“But how about your work?” The little girl face lit with happiness. She missed her mommy terribly. She knew her mom was a busy career woman. She heard a lot of people praised her mom, but she also hated her jobs. She told her mom that she would be okay if her mom had to go for business trip on her birthday, but the truth was she cried when she told her best friend about that.
“I’ll take a leave. Now go to your room, I need to call your daddy.” She started to dial a number.
“I am here,” a voice that she longed for suddenly blew to her ears.
They looked at each other. Some part waiting for the other to take a lead; some other part eagerly wanting to end the fight.
“I am sorry,” together they said at the same time. Suddenly Eunsook was on Kibum’s embrace. Kibum buried his face on his beautiful wife’s hair, while Eunsook buried his face on her husband neck.
“I’ve been thinking.” Eunsook loosed her embrace and looked at Kibum’s eyes. “I think, I can ask my boss to give me less responsibilities.”
“But… what about your career. You know right, if you ask them to give you lesser works, you will lose your change to be promoted?” Kibum asked. He knew, somehow he was selfish to ask Eunsook to stop working.
“I think I have achieved the top of my career as a professional now; I am quite satisfied with it. However, my careers as a wife and a mother still have a long path to go. I know, I will see my other junior colleagues overtake my position, but they can’t take my family. I will always have you and the kids to brag.” Eunsook smiled sweetly.
“Is it okay with you?”
“Yeah… You know what, I feel good. I have to be honest to you, for months I felt guilty for leaving you and the kids for business trips or for working late. But now, I feel relieve. I know I made the right decision.”
“I don’t want you to stop working, Eunsook. I know you love working. I just want you to slow down. I want us to slow down.”
“Us? You will slow down also?”
“Yes. I think, I am starting to get comfortable with my office system. I know what I should do and I have a solid team. So I think, I can also slowing down.” Kibum smiled at his wife.
“We can manage this Kibum. Heck! We've survived with all the leaking roof and humongous bills before, right?” Eunsook started to laugh.
“Yes…. Because we are the famous OnKey!” Kibum laughed together with his wife.
Marriage live is no fairy tale. It always needs commitment from both sides. At the end, family’s needs are the ultimate goals.
