i'm not sure if you're familiar with it already, but the book "belonging to the army: camp followers and community" by holly a. mayer would be of interest to you. it is part of the suggested reading list for my regiment.
Our regiment does not have a suggested reading list for distaff, as far as I know (granted, there are only two of us, and Jeff sometimes falls out and I don't come around much!)
Those are interesting stories! I've heard both of those myths, too.
I started reading "Belonging to the Army," but I admit I couldn't get very far. It's *very* dry. Or maybe I just wasn't in the mood. I'll try again one day.
I'd like to do a laundry impression some day, if I can get a hold of some tubs.
I did just get that book and I need to re-read that part, but my takeaway was that laundresses were as bad as fishwives. I need to brush up on my abusive language - in French no less! "Your mother was a hampster and your father smelt of elderberries!"
Heehee! Sometimes, I think we're too polite in front of the public than would have been common. Is it weird that I think it'd be fun to script and choreagraph a fight with a friend for the public? Sharon Ann Burnston suggested doing this, but on a political level where you fight about liberty vs. king. I think closer to the real thing was something I read on a Landskneckt page (16th Century German Mercenaries) where two women scream at each other in German and start a "fistfight."
Oh, fishwives! If I knew I couldn't possibly kill someone, I think that's what I'd really like to do (I worked in a fish department for years, and the smell doesn't bother me that much).

I haven't read it, but it could be useful to you; it's all in France, but it you are portraying a French colonist, it might apply with some tweaking.
