Sweetheart, I have seen squalor. That ain't it. I'm sorry you had that experience... in the last month of my elderly cat's life I had some of those problems, and the only thing worse than getting a surprise is having unexpected company before you can clean up.

I've heard that some people add an extra litter box when they go away for a few days -- maybe that might help with some of the revenge behavior too. Asking a friend to stop in once during the absence seems to help with easing anxiety about abandonment (and of course emptying the box is an added benefit).
