i might post some real stuff later, but i was thinking about this at work all day. there was a very short-lived thread on whitechapel about watchmen and the wb/fox conflict; it quickly devolved into an argument over whether or not this movie is an abomination and if it is an insult to alan moore.
i didn't want to contribute to the fire. so i saved it for here. :p )

Well, Alan Moore doesn't like film adaptations of his work. It's true. But have you ever read an interview with him? That crotchety old fuck doesn't like ANYTHING. Except what he writes, of course. He worships a Celtic snake-god and has a relationship with 2 women, as well. He's just kind of on his own planet where everything that's cool by Alan Moore IS Alan Moore and everything that isn't is a personal insult to him ( ... )

i agree with everything you've said (alan moore is actually pretty low on the list of creators i give a shit about), except that the movie won't make a fuck-ton of money.

the same fanboys who are going to see watchmen are the ones who have seen dark knight at least twice (truthfully, i don't know if there's any sure way to back that statement up, but there's no way middle-aged women are going enough to get the box office numbers as high as they are). so far, the entire marketing campaign has been for, and only for, the fans. the teaser trailer is all panels from the book (which is why you still have no idea what it's about), all the posters out now are reproductions of ads dc did for the book. i think the strategy is to get the geeks to do all the marketing, and that's either lazy or savvy. i hope it's the latter.

Geeks didn't make Dark Knight big. In fact, if there's anything Hollywood has learned over the last 5 years, it's that fans are unreliable and finicky for marketing purposes.

What made Dark Knight big was regular Joes and Heath Ledger's death.
