have you read/seen coraline? that's the reference.

then again, i think you're onto something that the world is a really boring nightmare. i have a professor who basically professes to reject reality. i laughed it off at first but i kind of get where she's coming from; the law is a heavy-handed and sometimes awful topic, so she just divorces it entirely from reality in her head.

ah, coping mechanisms. mine's chocolate, coffee, and the occasional absinthe.

Naw, I haven't seen Coraline.

To tell the honest truth, I've tried and I've tried to get into Gaiman and I just...can't. There'z something about his style that doesn't click with me.
I think what it is, really, is the way he handles his characters; they often feel more like they're there for no reason other than to hold the swords or to move the plot forward than being fully-realized people.
I mean, my favorite shows and movies are often about situations that interest me greatly...but not always. And in all cases, but especially in the cases where the scenario is not one I'm immediately interested in, what keeps me coming back are the characters and their relationships with each other.
Maybe one person's the funny one, one person's the crazy one, one person's the cute one, and when they talk with each other it's interesting, they become people I wish I knew, people I'm happy to spend an hour a week or two hours in a darkened room full of strangers to hang out with these friends of mine again ( ... )
