Apparently I've adapted to England more than I realized. Right now I'm staying at my dad's and the lack of kettle left me perplexed. No kettle of any kind. I was at a total loss. How do I boil water? In a pot on the stove like a savage?! Uh, no. The microwave seems to do the trick...but I don't like it.

hey, no need to suffer, they sell electric kettles at walmart now. I converted my parents, they use it all the time too. Darn handy for a lot more than just making tea, I think.

Nice thought but I bet it'd be wasted in this house. They don't prepare a lot of food or drink here, I gather. Hell, they haven't even got a coffee pot - or any tea or coffee in the house.

I found an electric kettle in Marshall Fields in 1990 and got it for Christmas that year. An English friend living in the US now has it. And, the US friends who visited here in September are purchasing one for their home after discovering the joys of an electric kettle.

I remember the last time I was in the US, standing in a kitchen willing the stove top kettle to go faster!

Those things take so long it's better to find something to do while you wait!

I've been using the stove top kettle since I returned :-) (ok, fine, when I'm in a hurry I use the microwave... or when I forget my tea for an hour)
