A while back, iuliamentis came back from a stay at The Cottage with all of the writerly types. She brought back, among other things, a cake that had been made (by Mer?) with Coca-Cola substituted for all of the wet ingredients.

I was terrified by this concept and was convinced it was part of a bet to get me to try the cake.

I thought it tasted like crap, frankly, but other people liked it. Or claimed to.

I think Sprite might've been better than a cola. I think I had 7-up cake when I was a kid, and liked it.

Sprite, maybe even Diet Sprite, worked great for us when we made some cakes like that. Very moist, tasted fantastic.

Oh I see, when Scalzi posts about Coke cake, you believe him.

I liked the Coke cake well enough. It's not as good as real cake, but it'll do in a pinch.

Never use Coke. Use Dr Pepper. It's better. Mer, if you see this comment, make me a Dr Pepper cake. I'll provide Dublin Dr Pepper.

I've never noticed much difference from proper (made from a box of mix) cake, except that the one I had made with diet soda had an aspartame-y aftertaste.
