To be perfectly honest, I was mainly rooting for Felipe González in all of this -- because he has shown himself to be a very capable statesman during his 14-year tenure as Prime Minister of Spain and because I'm a bit disconcerted by the concentration of center-right politicians holding high positions within the EU (reason why a center-left person would have been very good for the sake of balance and representation).
However, Mr. Van Rompuy was my second choice, because I like what I keep reading about his handling of Belgian internal politics. He's a good pick -- and seems to have been balanced out by Baroness Ashton as far as political affiliation is concerned.
Also, that article is complete shite and you shouldn't let it get to you. Alarmist rags like The Sun wrote even worse things about us Romanians, when the due date of January 2007 approached -- saying that we were disease-ridden and would brutally invade the UK, infecting the general population with hepatitis. Pffffft ( ... )
