Theory post: Delta Eagle & Bruno

Dec 19, 2010 22:37

WARNING: This post contains unmarked spoilers up until Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's episode 139, screenshots from the series itself, some Greek and Greek mythology, and mathematical concepts the author does not fully understand herself.

A few days ago I was contemplating Delta Eagle, Bruno's D-Wheel. Whereas the names of some D-Wheels have a clear meaning, Delta Eagle's name seemed to fall in the 'awesome but nonsensical' category to me. That is, until I started thinking more closely about it. So after some thinking, I've come up with three explanations for the name Delta Eagle (some probably more plausible than others).

1. Speed

The first theory is probably the most straightforward one and centers around what Bruno probably does best: driving really fast. That immediately explains the 'Eagle' part of the name: an eagle is known as a very fast animal. A diving bald eagle, for example, can reach speeds up to 160kph/100 mph.

As for the Delta part: a delta (or Δ, as I will refer to it from now on), is a symbol commonly used in maths to indicate change, and if I'm not mistaken (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) it does tend to show up in formulas involving speed and acceleration.

In short, Delta Eagle can be considered a general reference to the speed at which Bruno drives it, and/or a more specific reference to Accel Syncro, which was first introduced by Bruno, and of course hugely relies on speed.

2. The number four

(credit for this part goes to cynthia_harrell . I hadn't thought of it myself.)

If we focus solely on the Δ in the name, another possibility comes to light. Δ is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, and carries the value of 4 in the Greek numeral system. In the ruined future Bruno came from, there were four survivors: ZONE, Paradox, Aporia, and Bruno himself.

3. Αετός Δίας (Aetós Días)

Both Paradox and Aporia use a Greek word as their name, but Bruno, peculiarly, does not. However, considering Δ is already a Greek letter, as explained above, I didn't consider it too much of a stretch to translate 'Eagle' to Greek. This gives us Αετός (Aetos).

The most famous eagle in Greek mythology was Zeus' eagle. In Greek, this becomes Αετός Δίας  (Aetós Días), with Διας being an irregular possessive form of Ζευς (Zeus).

... Hey guys, take a good long look at the first letter of Δίας. We've seen that one before, haven't we?

Even though Δίας usually refers specifically to the god Zeus, the Latin 'deus' (god), is closely related to it. So if we take it to mean 'god'...

Well hello there ZONE.

Where does that leave us? If 'god' is ZONE, that makes Delta Eagle, and by extension Bruno, 'ZONE's Eagle'. Assuming that Bruno, as per his 'title', was meant to be fully loyal to ZONE, this can mean several things:
- He will willingly or unwillingly defect from Team 5D's if it comes to a confrontation with ZONE.
- Even though he was created to be loyal to ZONE, due to his memory loss, his mindset changed and he isn't anymore.
- The title originally belonged to Future!Bruno (the vrsion that died of old age), and only inherited by the Bruno we know now. It may or may not apply to him.

So. Thoughts? Other ideas? An urge to tell me how obviously crazy I am? Feel free to share in the comments!

Also, if Bruno ever needs a Greek name like Paradox and Aporia, I propose Αετός.

ETA because this post isn't cracky enough yet: I ran across something very interesting while studying my Chinese vocab.

God/deity = 神 (shen)

Eagle = 鹰 (ying)

God's eagle = 神鹰 (shenying)

Now it just so happens to be that 神鹰 is the actual Chinese name for one specific animal. What animal, you may ask?

A condor.

Yes. This can only mean that Bruno is secretly Wiraqocha Rasca.
