Epilogue : In Which Kid Chino and The Grinch Reach a Truce.
Ryan is waiting for Kirsten to finish her call to the contractors. She gave him the car in the morning so he could go to his appointment to get the stitches out, under the condition that he'd come pick her up once he was done.
Mr. Nichol's voice startles him just as he starts wondering how he can convince Kirsten to go for Thai food tonight. "So, Kirsten tells me you want to be an architect?"
Ryan turns to look at him, surprised. Mr. Nichol has made a point of avoiding him since their talk at the hospital, which is more than fine with Ryan. He doesn't want another confrontation; he just wants to live in peace. "Yeah Maybe."
"You any good?"
It sounds an awful lot like a challenge. It's also the closest thing to an opening as Ryan is likely to get.
So, he can either tell the man to fuck off, or he can take that chance to have what might actually be a civilized discussion.
Ryan doesn't really care what Mr. Nichol thinks about him. He dealt long ago with the fact that the man will never like him.
However…
However, it would certainly please Kirsten, and go a long way into mending her relationship with her father.
"How would I know? My teachers seem to think so," he offers.
Before he knows it, he's in Mr. Nichol's office, looking over some blueprints and a model for a new building the group is working on.
When Kirsten finds them, ten nerve-wracking minutes later, Mr. Nichol is busy explaining to Ryan that the contractors should be ready to start in about a month.
"Ryan? Dad?" Kirsten asks.
Mr. Nichol waves her back. "Yes, yes, the boy will come pick you up in five minutes. I need a word with him first."
She looks at Ryan, who gives her what he hopes is a reassuring smile, and steps out. "Five minutes," she calls over her shoulder, the unspoken, "If you're not out by then, I'll send in the reinforcements," making Ryan bite back a smile.
Mr. Nichol looks at Ryan appraisingly. "I don't trust you."
Every fiber of Ryan wants to drawl, "Really?" but he stomps on the impulse. He has pushed the man enough; he doesn't want to totally antagonize him if it can still be helped.
"I am, however, willing to be civil until you prove me right," Mr. Nichol adds.
"So, you won't treat me like a criminal until I rob the Cohens?"
"Precisely."
Are you sure you'll be able to stay polite for that long? Ryan wants to ask.
Now is not the time to channel his inner Seth, though.
Instead, when Mr. Nichol offers his hand with a smirk, Ryan shakes it.
"Deal."
