Epilogue

The surprise party actually takes Ryan by surprise.

Of course, the fact that his birthday was well over a month ago may have something to do with the fact that he almost has a heart attack when Seth pushes him into the living room "to show him something," and the Cohens, Summer and Marissa jump at him, screaming, "SURPRISE!"

He waits for his heart to start beating again, then smiles and asks, "Whose idea was it?"

"Think, Atwood," Summer says, walking up to him and hugging him. "Doesn't this have Seth Cohen Grand Gesture written all over it?" Summer releases him, looks him up and down, smirking. "Be glad we talked him out of renting the Bait Shop. That's where he was planning to hold this at first."

Ryan's shudder isn't all faked. "My birthday was several weeks ago," he points out.

She shrugs, smiling brightly. "And you thought you were safe from the party? Ryan, Ryan, Ryan..." she pats his shoulder condescendingly. "We were just waiting for you to start acting a little less…"

The usually blunt girl bites her lip in thought.

"Post-traumatized," Ryan supplies.

"Well, yes."

They share a silence, then she nudges him gently. "Enjoy your party, Chino. You deserve some fun."

Then Sandy approaches him, pats his shoulder with a smile. "Seth insisted," he says, gesturing around. There are balloons and food and his friends are here, but Ryan understands why Sandy almost looks like he's apologizing.

"It's okay," he says. "I'm fine."

Sandy nods. "We noticed. We just…"

They worry. Ryan gets that. And the truth is, while he's doing better, he still doesn't feel one hundred percent well, and he suspects it might take a while for him to do.

Still, much as it pains him to admit it, the therapy helps.

Sandy draws him into a hug, pats him on the back. "I know it's not easy," he says. "I wish I could make it easier."

"You do," Ryan whispers, astonished that Sandy can doubt that. There's just no way he would have kept it together without the Cohens to help him and he wishes he could find a way to convince Sandy of that. The only thing to do, though, is to keep on fighting until he's healed-and not just physically this time.

"Good." Sandy releases him. "There's Thai food," he says. "Kirsten ordered it herself."

"I'm still the Queen of ordering food," Kirsten throws in, an amused smile on her face.

Ryan allows Sandy to guide him to the party, enjoying the comfort of the presence of his family.
