I felt like it took me forever to read it (though that's probably because I was reading it at the same time as Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything).

Ha! I can relate to that. I really must re-read A Short History... again and see if I understand more if it this time round. I certainly enjoyed it!

It really is a wonderful book--it makes you awed of just being alive (and scared that you might not be for much longer, should an asteroid hit Earth (again), or a supervolcano erupt (again), to name but two possible calamities.)

And the chapter about quantum physics always makes me laugh--it's so gleeful about no one understanding particles anymore.

(I just bought The Road to Little Dribbling, it's on my to-read list for the near future...)

I don't think I ever understood any particle physics! All I know is that Quarks come in flavours called Up, Down, Strange, Bottom and Top, and Charmed. And I learned that from watching Roxanne at an impressionable age.

This may give you some indication of what a joy I was to teach in science class!

Heee, I might have been even worse. Our physics/chemistry teacher had pretty much given up by our last year of high school. We were about a dozen girls in his class, all in a literary section, so usually, he'd explain something and ask if we'd understood. We'd shake our heads, looking lost and he'd reply: "None of you is going to pursue chemistry in college, right? Just learn it by heart for the evaluation, it'll be fine..."

(And we weren't even going anywhere near something as complicated as particle physics).
