From what I've gathered, this is an "event," where each individual is compelled to speak nothing but the truth. The strong emotions you've seen probably result from being forced to reveal one's secrets.

Perhaps a small part of them wants their secrets known. It's that part that compels them to publicly air things they would typically not.

Nobody can lie, Helena. That's why everyone is on edge, lots of people have secrets they'd rather not tell and being unable to hide their secrets makes them uncomfortable.

Being forced into honesty like this, it's not right. Not even white lies are allowed, you can't spare peoples feelings, you can't protect your secrets... It's dangerous.
