Arthog Falls

The weather forecast was favourable and G had planned another walk. We drove to Arthog and parked in the huge layby below the village hall. The name "Arthog" derives from the Welsh word for "bear" and is a reminder that we used to have bears roaming around, though they are long gone now. We also used to have wolves. Legend has it that the last ( Read more... )

What a nice waterfall! I like the fungus, and especially the photo of the river as you walked along it. If "afon" is river in Welsh, does this mean that the River Avon in England is named "river-river"?

The River Avon is indeed the River River.

I hadn't ever done that walk before but I think it's one we may do again.

It looks like a very fine walk.

(I'm glad about the River River.)

It was a lovely walk and one I'm sure we'll do again sometime. Everything looks different in a different season.

Our small streams and rivers are slowly recovering, but not as spectacularly as yours!

The rivers always recover quickly as soon as we get a reasonable amount of rain. It will take a while for the reservoirs to recover though.

I hadn't expected the waterfall. There were lots of rapids and tiny falls upstream, but the main fall was really pretty and unexpected because my husband had chosen the walk and I didn't know that area.

What a beautiful walk! Gorgeous waterfall.

Though that path looks quite hard on the ankles!

It's officially a bridleway, but I wouldn't want to even ride up it, let alone down. Fortunately the path improved after a mile or so, then the path back down was pretty but occasionally narrow and perilous as it clung to the steep valley side. I find my walking pole really helps my balance on path like that.

How beautiful. That black fungus is amazing - but definitely one to avoid, just to be on the safe side!

I always wonder how these "poisonous unless treated in some really complex way" foods ever got added to the diet. They don't even look tasty, being black and shiny.

I have often wondered the same thing. Imagine a menu with these accompanying fugu fish as a course :)

And with cassava as the carbohydrate part of the meal. :-)
