here's another photo post, although, sadly, still not so much with photos of the beauty of china. still though. photos of china and people i work with.
in tiananmen square, by the forbidden city.
if you plan on watching the next summer olympics in 2008, get used to seeing these wacky mascots. they're china's olympic... whatevers. creatures. they're already selling them all over here. there are actually five, but pictured here i think are four of them. they were up in tiananmen square, and lots of people were checking them out.
there's clara and me at the summer palace. fun times.
there's most of the aston 2 staff. or at least... over half. a lot of people weren't there that night.
there's was lots of this that night. toasting toasting toasting. you see connie to my left there, and cathy to my right. both cts. i appreciate them.
there are some more cts. i only actually have nancy for class (she's in red). lucy (in black) and mary (in gray) actually work the front desk.
that's mr. zhang and maree. he's our maintenance man, and also used to have a major part on a popular shandong chinese soap opera. yeah, you heard me right. from being a tv star to cleaning toilets for foreigners. don't ask me. maree was the manager at aston 1, but just finished up and left a few days ago.
here's a picture showing one of the ways foreigners here keep themselves sane. instead of going green and saying "that fish not only still has its head, but sharp teeth. oh, and now people are eating its eyeballs," you just pose the fish and take pictures to send home. these girls are vegetarian, so i would imagine they take a lot of pictures like this.
so, these are mainly amy's a6 and a4 students.
this is me and wendy, the one of my four a5 students who showed up that night.
here's what it looks like to be at a "banquet" with chinese people. we had WAY too much food, as you typically do. i think the students tried to order a reasonable amount, but the restaurant required we buy more.
here are the guys. i actually already knew most of them. the second guy there is abraham. he's one of the students we all know, mainly because he goes to adult english corners. he was also in one of karen's classes last term, and he was one of her favorites. the second guy is named patrick, i think, and he wasn't in my class, but sure showed up for it enough. he was always making up for missed classes by attending mine. there was one week when none of my normal students showed up, but he was there. the guy on the far right is victor. he's another one of those students we all know. he's a family therapist/psych prof. he's always reading scientific articles in english, then bringing them to school and asking us to rephrase sentences. what was he asking me about tonight? "to say an being an expert equates being domineering is a false equation." something like that that. it's an interesting challenge to rephrase for him.
friday, i think i may be going to daming lake with the others, so hopefully i'll have some scenic pictures of that. i still don't have my new camera. apparently jean "knows a guy," so we're waiting to go with her next week. once i get it, i'd love to spend an hour or two just walking around, taking pictures of the city.
