Depends what it is, whether I've had the opportunity to discuss what I like, whether it fits (and whether it is returnable if it doesn't - usually a no-go with underwear!), and so on. So, like any other gift category. I'm not going to feel insulted or be made uncomfortable by receiving lingerie unless it's excessively cheap and tacky or known to be something not to my taste, or unless there is some other problem in the relationship which is making me feel uneasy about sex. Other people's views may vary, of course.
I almost never turn down socks, although I might be a little disappointed by a 10-pack of socks all the same.
Thanks. I was remembering how icky I felt when my partner at the time gave me a pvc basque. I would have liked it on someone else... in retrospect, I think it was pinging my gender stuff. I wondered what other women thought.
Yeah, this is more or less what I think. Buying me underwear that's too small will make me annoyed. Buying the wrong kind of underwear (ie. anything other than cotton that is knicker rather than thong shape) will probably leave me feeling awkward 'cos I wouldn't want to reject the gift, but I don't wear thongs or anything that feels uncomfortable. Buying me something 'sexy' would be likely to make me annoyed that my lover hadn't bothered to have a conversation with me about what s/he might like to see me wearing on occassion.
Basically, what ewtikins said. I'd be happy if it were something that suited me, fitted me, and was more or less the kind of thing I might have chosen for myself - and I have very definite tastes in underwear, when/if I wear it at all. If it was something pink or lacy or frilly or faffy, I'd be wondering whether the person who bought it had ever been paying attention to me at all - I don't know about insulted, but I'd be unimpressed.
Assuming I qualify. I've got pretty similar thoughts to those above. Most essentially for me, it has to suit me. I find nothing wrong with the thought/concept of it, but the execution must be tasteful.
