It's been a while since last update, so may need some rundown on things..
First off;
- Been to EF in Germany (convention) and had a lot of fun there, but....
- ...had a VERY busy period of experiments to go through and reports to write after coming back to work
(some experiments/results where done during the week off, or would have the results come back until after, but where also very important due to deadline for a report containing said results)
- had a rough time due to some other complications as well, but not worth mentioning.
Not updating also simply relates too lazynes, procrastination and gaming (X-com came out!)
Things of note:
- There was a hobby market at our work, in which I was asked to present my RPG collection.
Interest started off low, but after doing a session with a few interested player's, it seemed like interest grew rather quickly.
Unfortunately interest came towards the end of the market, when I was asked to clean up, so it came a bit on the late side.
Still been a nice event.
- X-com enemy unknown was released!
I preordered it, as I am fan of the earlier games.
It has some things I really like (mostly tactical ground missions are done great!), but also lost some costumisation and base building bits I liked in earlier games.
It focused on one thing, and watered down everything else sadly.
Also; the game is full of bugs, which is my biggest annoyance...
Well apart from the game being way too...short...
I already completed it in 6 hours, with every alien captured alive and all research completed. (seriously, that's WAY shorter then any of the previous games needed to get to the end, even more so to research everything)
- Troubles seem to grow in getting the Ravenloft group together.
Supposed to be a fixed group, with something like a monthly meeting.
Didn;t turn out to be very viable unfortunately, so in an open rpg day last saterday I discussed the "options".
Mostly we either have a ongoing, drop-in drop-out campaign with a setting/system that can support this method of play. (Personally was thinking of X-com campaign, where soldiers can die on a regular basis, but overall advancement in research and technology can help still having a sense of advancement, even if a player died starting with a "new recruit" (gaining the newest tech and armor).
Players who do not show up one session, can always "drop in" another, and even those just trying it out and do not wish to continue can simply "step in and out" as desired.
This would eliminate the idea of a fixed group, just announcing when a session is planned, and whomever wants/can come over..joins in. Regardless of starting new, or having played previous sessions. (there is however a overarching story, but am planning to keep this updated on a campaign-portal website when mayor discoveries are made).
Or..
we go the online rpg chat/skype route....
My brother has been doing this for a while, and unfortunately has been consuming him...
Last saterday, for the first time, he simply didn't join in with the rpg session as he was to prepare for his own session on skype.
His online group has already been the reason he always stops earlier on sunday and saterdays with rpg sessions.
(noting he has a session at wednesday, saterday AND sunday, you would expect he could at least drop one or on occasion cancel when another session is planned)
I personally prefer the more personal "face to face" type of roleplaying around a table.
Easier to add atmosphere, can easier see when someone wants to say something etc.
Skype by voice chat may become a bit more chaotic in that sense.
Unlike my brother, I will not play 4th edition D&D or use miniatures on a virtual tabletop when going with Skype.
Not sure what will be played, but may be anything from a modern retroclone 2e D&D, to a sci-fi rpg or other thing I have around.
(though not all systems would work as well online, as on the tabletop, for various reasons. (for example; SAGA will be hard to do online as you require each player to have a hand of cards, and a combined deck to draw from.)
It is the intention to make it a more prolonged campaign however..
May even decide to have current characters from SAGA simply made into a "copy" made with a different rules set. (most straightforward would be 2nd, which SAGA is based on, and using a "kit" to adapt the character more to the SAGA counterpart).
Hope it works better, and has less of an issue when someone does not show up (nobody had to travel or spend money to get here, so easier to cancel it).
But don't want to make it the norm, more something to abridge sessions when coming together in person is not an option.
It will never be the same feel to go online for rpg things like this, but at the very least we can advance a story easier.
It is likely I will lose my brother as a player in this, but honestly think he is much more involved with his online buddies then anyone else these days anyway.
(hardly seems to care about other things lately)
Sorry for the random thoughts..
I have been living in Limbo lately, lot's of things to do.. and time flying by way to fast, to even realise some of the other things that are happening around me.
Wanted to plan a RPG session with atmosphere for Halloween, but so far..seems to be hard to get people interested.
Basically it's => RPG with a horror theme + dressing up as medieval fantasy characters for a group-photo.
(also noting, we have stuff hanging around for those who have no clothes to fit the occasion)
We did this before with our D&D group, it's fun!
Doing one with an authentic medieval dinner would be the next step, but takes a lot of prep time.
I have too many crazy ideas with the limited time I have....
