Awhile ago a couple of LJ friends and I were discussing the question of who'd voted for our Prime Minister in the recent federal election, and I'd somehow amused them by pointing out that only voters in his own Calgary riding had been able to put an "X" beside his name. The rest of us see our local candidates on our ballots.

I didn't think the Tories had true One Member, One Vote - I thought they had a riding system that allocated points based on riding turnouts...

Something like that; 100 points per riding, regardless of whether the riding has 160 members or 16000, and if eg 68% of the members there vote for a candidate, he/she gets 68 points. That should ensure that a leader has good support across the country, not massive support in one *cough* Alberta *cough* place and none everywhere else. Reform and the Alliance had simple One-Member-One-Vote, but the scaling was part of the wisdom we picked up from the Progressive Conservative side.

I'd imagine that's how the Liberals will end up - they still have a fairly antique constitution, but there's strong grassroots motion to fixing it, which is getting good reception at all levels, so...

Only problem is that this can only get changed at conventions, so it can take awhile.

I need to find out more about Ignatieff before I pretend to have a well-formed opinion about him.

But we all know Rae. For better or for worse, even if he's a good leader he's not the right leader-- I think someone took him aside and said "Look, we need Ontario back, and you're, um, sorta tainted."

What happened to Gerard Kennedy? Did he lose all leadership aspiration?

Ignatieff wins by default.

Gerard Kennedy apparently still owed money from last time. He'll probably run the next time around and may well do well.
