After rescuing Axel from the Turks, and his dignity, Aerith had known that whatever peace she could offer him would be temporary. That didn't stop her trying ( Read more... )

Axel had, surprisingly, quite enjoyed his stay at Aerith's cottage. After all he'd been through and after everything he'd done, he was surprised to find that he'd rather relished normal life. No immediate danger, no fighting, nothing out of the ordinary. Just work, sleeping, eating and casual conversation. He liked Aerith a lot, too. She was genuine, honest and sweet but still cheeky enough to be funny without being overbearingly nice.

It was... good.

He knew it wasn't to last, though. He'd never kidded himself for a moment into thinking that it was going to be forever. Temporary was how it had always been in his head and, although he felt a deep pang of sadness at Aerith's words, he just had to accept it.

"You're probably right," he said, not quite able to keep the sad look from his face. "It was only a matter of time, huh?"

There was a sad expression on Aerith's face as she nodded. "You're right under their noses. They won't keep missing you." They already weren't, in all likelihood. Staying with her only made it riskier.

"I can take you to the edge of the city, if you'd like. You'd be better of getting as far away from Midgar as you can."

Even though she was going to miss him. It had been so nice to have a friend around to talk to, and tease. It hadn't mattered, for once, that she was different, or weird. When it came down to it, Axel was even weirder, in his own way.

He nodded, just once. It was going to be tough being on his own again. He hadn't got the chance to do much of it as it was, on account of being captured, but it was still going to be hard. He'd rather gotten used to the company.

"Tonight?" There was a mote of hesitance in his voice.

Waiting until morning might be too late, of course, but the idea of leaving so soon and so suddenly was difficult.

Aerith nodded, a sad little movement of her head. "When it's late would be better." They might be less likely to see him leave, then. It would give him the time he needed to escape.

"Will you be all right?" She asked, worrying about where he might go, and who he might run into next. How he'd even get anywhere, and where he'd stay were more concerns.

She didn't want to just show him the exit and leave it at that. She wanted to know he would be safe.
