If you want a good fun read, you'd probably really enjoy the Lemony Snicket books. Not quite as thick as the Potter series, but the use of language in there is quite excellent. To paraphrase from memory one of my favorite passages.
If you are allergic to a thing, you should not put that thing in your mouth. Especially if that thing is cats.

Really, I think the entire series is just one tremendous setup for one of the most amazing bits of allegory I've ever come across, in book 13. After I read it, I was surprised there weren't more public book burnings of the series. I guess because the movie didn't do as well as the Potter movies (mainly because it was crap) it hasn't embedded itself into mainstream vitriol, but there you are ( ... )

Gormenghast is indeed excellent. The BBC series based on it was also pretty good, and stayed fairly close to the (1st two) books.

I've read most of Mielville's 'New Crobuzon' books, and only Perdido Street Station is overwritten. I'm guessing it's because he went to painful extremes to make the work believable and recognizable.

You should read The Scar, it's next in the series and totally excellent.

1. Don't have a life on the outside just now.
2. Still working on that one. Cats may have something to do with it.
3. Okay
4. I'm so happy that's it's raining today. I wish I could lick the purply-grey clouds in gratitude.

My first introduction to Gormenghast was the series, and I have to admit that the parts I liked least are where the series departed from the books. I'm still not convinced about Mielville's stuff, though. Let me finish PSS and we'll see if I'm up for more. Bug-people, bird-people, demons, and people, magic and science, etc. all make it seem a little overcrowded.

What do you recommend in the Steampunk vein, btw?

..Life is good on the outside, things are good and bad, but that's what makes it fun.
...I suppose life is about finding what you love.
....I am tired but living with my eyes open, and it's beautiful out here.
.....I love music. More than anything.

Come out of your cave, we miss you.

Well, the problem with my cave is that it's in Australia right now. So if I come out I'm liable to get sunburned and still not see anyone I know.

So... what will you do with yourself? What are you doing with yourself?
