Lorne! It was supposed to be Angel!

The battle with the sarvan had been easier then I had expected. I don't know why Angel sent Lorne with me. What was he going to do? Sing a high-pitched tune and irritate their doggy ears? Well, actually, he did hit the note in Macarthur Park, but he really didn't need to be here ( Read more... )

I watched him appear in a misty glaze, standing in the shadows. Damn fool actually thought that Angel would forgive him. Well everyone makes a mistake here and there. I had thought the little vision girl was harmless. Boy, had I screwed up on that one. Nothing like a little pain in the neck to suddenly be missing it.

Of course I had adjusted to my new home rather quickly. Evil and evil mix like blood and blood. Sure sometimes it's a little off but in the end it all blends into the same vessel and you go on.

I coughed a little to let him know that he wasn't completely alone. My partner was back in town. Just a new town, new place. But one were we always won. Like always. Death can be a bonus if you work for the right people.

"Seems you picked the wrong team. Ready to get back to work?"

Not that he really had a choice in the matter, but I thought I would be nice for a change. Better than, you idiot you're going to have to prove yourself for centuries. Figured he'd find that one out on his own.

Not that I was really surprised. I had been killed by Lorne. I knew that I had died, so not so much of a surprise that who, but Lilah would approach me and talk about teams.

She was talking about my decision to help Angel, and how right she was, that I had picked the wrong team.

"I take it, Lilah, that you had a front row seat for the whole thing then?"

I managed a smile and looked at her, really curious about how things were goin on Earth.

"So, what happened? Did the Black Thorn all by the farm like the Sarvan did at my hands and more importantly, did Angel die?"

I felt my chest. No bullets there, but there was still some pain.

Smiling at him I nodded slowly. The seat had been a sought after ticket. Watching heroes fall is always a crowd pleaser. Gives the firm a little side cash down here. Money is after all the root of all evil.

"Let's just say that Hell has an entire new section of idiots walking around."

Lorne didn't make it into the club. Nor the fake lawyer with his picked apart brains. I am sure we can play with that one. Nightmares are a very interesting tool for the living.

Watching him feel around for his admission ticket I grinned.

"That magic bullet, it's gone. Nifty side benefit of the dying. Like my neck is firmly attached to my body." I smiled at his look of uncertainity. "Oh Wesley decided to save me. Lobbed my head right off. What says love like an axe to the head?"

Never liked Pryce, but his chopping her head off, forced me to give her the thumbs up after she had said it."

I smiled as I did it, but it faded after hearing that nothing had happened to that deceiving pussy, ugly-ass green demon. If he had died, then I would kill him here, as we stood. I would find him and kill him, and now that wasn't an option.

"So, Angel, Spike, they all bought the farm? They actually suceeded? They actually all got their assignments completed and the partners answered with an apocalypse of their own?"

That was an interesting question, but I had more to ask her, like why I was here with her, right now, of all people, and what had happened to Eve was also firmly on my mind.

Sometimes it's the little things that count. The look that one gets when they give a snide comment, the glow of eyes when sex is about to begin, the looking at a beer like it's going to speak and tell you the scope of life. Not that I have ever done the latter. A bit more classy than that. Now Okie form Muskicokie boy is a different player altogether. He always prided himself on that big picture ideals. And then they blew up in his face ( ... )

Well, that was a breath of vile air, I thought to myself as she walked away.

She had come by to tell me that there was a home office down here and that I was low on the totem pole.

That was a joke to me. Maybe I would go to them, maybe I wouldn't. I wasn't about to play nice guy and kiss ass. It wasn't my style and besides, I had already earned my stripes. The partners didn't kill me, they sent me to Pleasantville. That had to count for something.

I ordered another beer, watching her leave. I'd be damned if I was going to follow her. I may not know the rules here, but I'm no schlep. If the hellhounds want a piece of me, then they would find a lot of pain for their troubles.
