Here lies the Frequently Asked Questions. If you do not see a question of yours answered on this page, then feel free to comment here or contact one of our friendly mods. ♥

Q. What is going on here?
Hellenist is an RPG based around figures in Greek Mythology put into a modern-day setting - specifically, modern day New York.

Khaos and Gaia have decided to play some mean tricks on the great (great)-grandchildren and have begun throwing them into modern day NYC with Prometheus as their Apartment Manager.

Q. Where exactly are they living?
The Acropolis Apartment Complex is in Manhattan, New York. Upon being accepted to the RPG, you will be directed here to set up a housing situation for your character with the Apartment Manager.

Q. Do they have to live there?
Currently we request that your characters remain within the apartment complex in order to establish activity and relationships with other characters. Living within the same building allows you plenty of opportunities to interact with one another without finding extra excuses. It also makes it easier for the older generations to torture you.

Q. Is anything else going to happen?
Of course! A well intended accident of Prometheus, a drive by natural disaster from Gaia, or just Khaos being her lovely self will trigger events. Each event will be announced, most commonly, by Prometheus or Khaos through the Mod journal, along with particular details for each occurrence. After all, it would just be too easy to leave them to settle naturally, wouldn't it? Gaia is naturally talented at shaking things up.

Q. Do I have to apply for a God/Goddess?
Not at all! Any figure from Greek mythology is fair game. Anything to drive people closer towards the edge of madness. This includes nymphs, centaurs, and even mortals from popular (or not so popular!) myths. What we ask in this case is that you include one or more references to the specific myth or character in question, and please keep in mind that all characters are to appear as regular humans on the mortal plane.

The only characters we ask that you do not apply for are any of the Titans or the Fates as listed below:

Titans; Oceanus, Tethys, Hyperion, Theia, Coeus, Phoebe, Cronus, Rhea, Gaia, Khaos, Mnemosyne, Themis, Prometheus, Crius, and Iapetus.
Fates; (aka Moirae) Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos

Q. Does this mean I can apply as an OC?
No, we do not accept original characters. This means that you are welcome to apply as one of the muses (such as Calliope), or as a nymph (such as Menthe), but you are not allowed to create your own gods, nymphs, muses, etc.

Q. What is the current character limit?
We have recently increased the character limit to four characters per person. This means four characters of any sort; one god, one nymph, one demi-god, and one mortal; three gods and a muse. It's up to you. However, while you're permitted to app four characters total, there is a restriction on applying for only two characters per month. This is to prevent serial apping, dropping, apping, etc. (It's not fun for anyone involved ;;)

If you've shown that you're capable of keeping up with all your characters, however, you can request extra character slots here.

Q. So, if our characters are mortal now, does that mean they can die?
Technically, yes. However, this is not a plot point we want to see taken lightly. If you want to pursue a plot in which your character dies, please contact a moderator first so that we can discuss the details on a case by case basis.

That being said, during events, characters can (and do!) die. At the end of the event, Khaos (or Gaia) will revive the dead characters. If it's during an event-and therefore not a 'permanent' death-there is no need to contact a mod.

Q. If all these characters are just suddenly turning up at the complex, how do they get identification? (ie. ID cards, birth certificates, etc. etc.)
When the Apartment Manager rooms your character, he also provides them with necessary identification to get around the city. Prometheus totally knows a guy. Legit street cred when you've been around as long as that Titan has.

Q. Can I use a character from a game/show/movie/etc. that has its basis in Greek mythology?
While you can certainly use influences from such characters in creating your own, we would prefer that your character be primarily from Greek mythology so as to avoid confusion.

Q. Can I use a played by from a video game/cartoon/etc?
We would prefer played bys to be real people. If you're having trouble finding icons or a person to portray your character, Hollow Art is a good source.

Q. If whatever Khaos throws at the characters would be contradictory to a character's flair, who wins, or is the character's flair just lessened instead of stamped out entirely?
While the gods will still be able to use their respective flairs, the effects of them will be lessened by events that contradict them.

Q. If one of the events would be contradictory to a character's personality, what happens? (ie. The event makes the characters want to sleep together, but my god/goddess/etc. has taken a strict vow of virginity.)
In the case of all events, it will be up to the player to decide how exactly their character is effected. Such as in the example: while that may encourage certain characters to hook up, others may simply spend the week incredibly uncomfortable and frustrated. Furthermore, if you have any questions regarding what is or isn't allowed in specific events, you are more than welcome to ask one of the mods or comment to the event post.

Q. I really want to apply for a character, but they're already reserved. What can I do?
Unfortunately nothing, unless they are not accepted to the game. We do not allow challenger applications.

Please also note: reservations are mandatory.

Q. But everything's screened, so I can't see the other application!
Unfortunately, yes. For privacy reasons, we do keep all applications screened until they are accepted. As such, you will not be able to see and evaluate your competitor application(s).

Q. Why do I need to post my application in my journal post-acceptance?
We ask that, upon being accepted, that you please place your application (with or without samples) under a cut in your character's journal. This is because it will aid any player (new or current) when they attempt to apply for a character that has history with your own. We encourage people to contact one another (it is not mandatory) but this is a great help for those perhaps shy or unable.

Q. What is rebooting, what are the rules for it as well as the risks?
Due to the effect it can have on the entirety of the game, rebooting is a serious thing to consider. If you find yourself unable to move forward at all and know there is no chance handling the problems in-game, then rebooting is one option. Your reasons must be presented to the Mod Team for consideration and you will then have one week to reboot if granted the chance. If an extension, like for applications, is required, it can be granted (five days).

We will keep in mind your reasons for a reboot while reviewing the application. It must also be noted that if your reboot application is rejected after having had the benefit of revision, the character will be dropped automatically. They will then become available for anyone to apply immediately while you go through a three day wait period.

Q. Do married couples have to live together?
Housing is determined on a character by character basis. In other words, if your character would like to live with his/her spouse, s/he may. If not, s/he may choose not to.

Q. What exactly is a "flair?"
Basically, the "flair" is based on what your god/goddess' primary power is, which in turn should be based upon what your character presides over. For example, Persephone is known as the Goddess of Springtime, and as such, an appropriate power for her would be the ability to control plant life. Thus, her "flair" is simply having a fantastic green thumb; she has a way with taking care of plants. Please be sure to remember that a flair is not a full-blown power. This should be something that is relatively unnoticeable to the everyday mortals sharing the city. This also means that if you are applying for a mortal, you don't need to worry about the flair. This is only for characters who would have extra ordinary powers normally. If you aren't sure about your character, feel free to ask!

If you're having difficulty deciding on a flair or if you're afraid yours is too close to being a real power, then please feel free to contact one of the mods. We'd be more than happy to help you decide on something appropriate!

Q. What's the difference between a 'continuous' and an 'activated' flair?
Basically, the only difference is whether or not your character has to specifically incite their flair. For example, Khione must make an actual effort to use her flair (activated) whereas Zelos is simply always in-tune with hers (continuous). This section is primarily for the other players in the game so that they can react around your character accordingly! If you aren't sure what type your flair should be, feel free to ask!

Q. Do the flairs affect the former gods the same way they affect regular mortals?
Absolutely. Your character is one of those mostly regular mortals now, so they are just as susceptible to the effects of one character's flair as any normal mortal would be. However; the exception to this would be if two characters had contradicting flairs. In that case, the flairs would have less of an affect.

Q. Since the mortals are...mortal, how do they end up in the present?
Khaos doesn't really care who all is caught in the crossfire. Moreover, many of the mortals interacted with the gods in one way or another, and so she's able to punish those that held them highly as well as discomfit them by including those that wish them ill. As for how the mortals have ended up in the present, players choose at what point in time during their characters' lives they are taken from, which can include them already having died. It's different for each player.

Q. So, would the sirens be open to play, then? And if there are multiple myths, which one do I go by?
The sirens are, indeed, open. As for the myth, it's your choice which one you decide to go by. There are too many different myths for us to sanction one or another, just let us know which you prefer.

Q. Do you have an activity requirement?
Yes we do! Activity Checks take place on the 1st of every other month (April, June, August, etc.) Within that time, you are expected to have made 20 !IC comments. These comments can be acquired by any means: logs, responding to comments, commenting on others' posts, etc. You are also expected to have made at least 1 post within each month. If you fail to meet the comment requirement for any character, they are considered dropped after the activity check with no grace period. If you fail to meet the journal requirement at the end of each month, the mods will cut your character via an unofficial sweep.

Q. I have to go away for a while. How can I make sure I don't get called out for inactivity?
We have a Hiatus Post for that! If you need to be away for an extended period of time, we request that you make note of it there. If this proves problematic, at least get in touch with one of the mods. If you don't post a hiatus or talk to a mod, then they do retain the right to cut your character after three weeks of inactivity, at which point you will have to reapply for your character.

Q. How do strikethroughs work in the game ?
For the sake of avoiding mass confusion, we have come to a game-wide consensus on the usage of strikethroughs. All stricken through text is considered deleted. You are still welcome to carry on strikethrough conversations, as many people are prone to, but keep in mind that this information is subtext and therefore not general knowledge of any commenters or onlookers.

Q. I wanted to use a PB of a different nationality, is that okay?
Absolutely! As long as you're using a real person as your PB, you're welcome to use anyone of any ethnicity you'd like!

Q. I want to pick up a character who was dropped. How does that work?
At the moment, when a character is dropped it's like they were never in the game, so it'll be like you're applying to play a character that was never played before!

A final note: Currently we have a lot of characters with already built CR but we look like a new game. This is due to this game being a new version/continuation of the old Greek mythology game Fallen Pedestals that closed unexpectedly. Please don't let this scare you off of apping! We love new players and look forward to you joining us.
