I would think, sans stigma, queer folk would largely grow up as a subset of society as a whole. Ideologically speaking. As we grow into an understanding of our sexual identities, we find profound rejection on the right, and some acceptance from liberals and others on the left. Further more, I really thing the characterization of the community as a whole is off... yes, the loudest parts are certainly liberal, but I think we'd rather just fuck and drink, thank you very much. More libertarian if anything.

As for marriage, if the federal government will start ignoring the semantic difference, I'm sure the movement would be perfectly willing to go along with it.

Wait, wait, let me back up a bit here: HOW important is the whole marriage thing to the average LBGT? Or is there a far greater focus on 'equal rights, motherfucker, or I'll put on a thong and carouse down Main Street'?

Which is a bleeding eyesore. Because many of them need to do more fucking CrossFit.

Let me further back up: what rights are being actively denied, either in actuality (ie, can't vote kind of shit), or perceived (ie, cops are shitheads)? Talking nationwide.

Untangling 'marriage' would be an even more difficult prospect. Yes, civil unions should be the government/legal relationship for everyone everywhere. The majority just isn't evolved enough to understand it.

Here's the thing that's tripping me up: I watch the news, and it's always "Gay Marriage." Only people I've seen even THROW the civil marriage thing out there was foxnews.com, and that was on an opinion poll.

So who's framing the debate? Who keeps throwing gay marriage out there? The LBGT community, or the o-so-ubiquitous 'THEM'?

That goes back somewhat to the 'separate but equal' issue and civil unions. If civil unions are defined as same-sex unions, then there is automatically room for them to be treated differently, even if all of the laws might say otherwise. Pushing for 'marriage' is sort of the best way that same sex union advocates have to make sure that the separate but UNequal thing doesn't happen.

Marriage laws as they exist now are effectively already civil unions. In fact the legal documents use the verbage "civil union" and "legally binding civil contract." It's the whackoffs on the right who keep talking about a legal marriage as if its God's Law or some nonsense. This is one of my major frustrations with the right - they sit around claiming the left is subverting the law & constitution while they do the exact same thing in the name of Gawd. This is also why I'm frustrated with the left - none of them have the cajones to call 'em on it.

As for LBGTs being massively leftist: most who I know -know- left & right don't care about their goals, but when the right all but says you're the spawn of satan... gota be like a north\south magnetic thing.
