Prompt: #8 There is No Arizona
Word Count: 224
Rating: PG
Summary: The dead rarely stay buried when the mind won't let them go
He promised her a new and better life. It was all Rogue could hear in her head. Juggernaut was speaking and he was trying to tell her what he felt for her and how badly he needed her. He was telling her he loved her and it was like she was hearing everything in echo. One voice deep and gruff and coming from above her and another all soft and sultry sweet, rumbling in that cajun accent. One that one time scared her and one that made her cry and there was nothing she could do but try and smile.
Tilting her head back, staring up at the sky and seeing nothing but never ending blue sky and she knew he wasn't under it anymore. Cain's head nearly reaching up to it and Gambit was beyond it and it was all blurry together until up was down and wrong was right and nothing made sense. She was becoming Alice and life was her rabbit hole. Nothing was real and yet everything around her was reality. Feeling her heart sinking in her chest and knowing that it was gone and she was lost and nothing was like she'd been promised.
I don't know where I'm goin' next but when I do I'll let you know

Word Count: 364

Summary: You just have to remember to listen to the living and not the dead
She was fading before his eyes. He could see it in the way she stood, in the way those red and black eyes seemed to dim and waver. She was giving up and giving in. Was that bastard swamp rat calling to her from inside her mind? Was he trying to lure her into dying, to giving up and laying down and joining him on the other side? Could it happen? Could she will herself to die and be gone forever? Or worse, she might just give up and be a shell. Never really living even though she was alive. It was her life but could he let her die inside just because that rat died before her?
Grabbing her, shaking her in the gentlest way he could before holding her close. "Come on, Rogue. Listen to me. You gotta not listen to him. You can't let that rat make you stop living. He's dead but you ain't, girl." Dropping down to sit on his ass, dragging her into his lap. That she didn't resist bothered Cain most of all. Cradling her close, he stroked her hair and barely resisted pressing a kiss to her temple. "I'm not going to lie to you and tell you it's going to get easier, either. Life ain't easy. But you can do this. You can fight back."
"He's dead, Baby. He's gone but you aren't. Come on, don't die with him. You gotta bend with it. Life's hard but you're stronger. Where's that girl I saw who didn't even whimper when they broke her arm? Where's the girl that, when they told her they were going to do it, cracked jokes about it until they stopped because they couldn't rile her? Where's that girl, Rogue?"
Shaking his head, he shifted and set her down on the asphalt. Rising, he barely felt her hand tug on his pant leg.
"Don't go,' she whispered, canting her head back to look up at him. "She's still here, Juggernaut. I'm still in here. Promise. I just got to remember where."

Summary: In the South they have entirely different ways of saying goodbye
Juggernaut hadn't let her see him, hiding the best he could behind monuments and masoleums. He knew that if she knew he was there it would start a fight and, no matter how much he'd hated the cajun bastard, he wasn't going to be the one to cause a ruckus at funeral. So instead he stayed where he was, watching her as she stayed knelt beside the tombstone. Everyone else had left hours ago and yet she still knelt there, staring at the stone as if the answer might suddenly appear.
Or Gambit might.
But he did edge closer, wanting to be there, to be ready, in case she broke down. He had seen her in those moments after the kiss they had shared, after Gambit had died in her arms and Cain was positive that she was building up to the same thing, another break down. She deserved someone to be with her if it happened. As he got closer though, he could hear her. At first it was just bits and pieces, a word here and a phrase there. But then the winds shifted and he could piece it all together into something a bit more coherent.
All my dreams have fallen down
Crawling around somebody save me
She didn't seem to notice him there, the words spoken and not sung as she raised her hands towards the darkened sky. Words fading out once more, becoming a low thrum as she sang. Body swaying slightly, palms up towards the sky. Letting them fall, fingers draping over the tombstone, caressing the carved stone as one might a lover. A pang of jealousy stabbing through Juggernaut as he realized that must be how she touched Gambit, how she had shared her love for him, gloved hands caressing that swamp rat's body with such tenderness it made Cain glad the man was dead or he might desire to kill him on the spot.
I feel my wings have broken in your hands
I feel the words unspoken inside
When they pull you under
And I would give you anything you want
Then something was in her hands and Cain couldn't resist moving closer. Peering close, he saw the cards cradled in hands as she pressed them to her breast. Head bowing, he didn't need to see her face to know she was crying. So often she would do that when they were in the cell, using the fall of her hair to hide her tears and to dry them. He wanted to take her into his arms, tell her that she wasn't broken, just bruised, and that she could heal with time. But he knew that seeing him now would likely be another fight. Instead he curled down to sit on the damp grass, watching Rogue as she continued her ritual. He had realized with the chanting that was what she was doing. She was performing some swamp voodoo over the grave of her dead lover.
I've been waiting for you
I see the world has folded in your heart
I feel the waves crash down inside
I've made this whole world shine for
Just stay
Stay
Come on
I'm still waiting for you
With that Juggernaut rose. He couldn't listen to it any longer. She was trying to call back the dead and it broke his heart that she would rather sell her soul to try and bring back the dead than to realize just what she had before her. He loved her and she was in love with the dead.
