Tomorrow

Tomorrow is my annual review.  One thing we'll be discussing is that team lead position. I have reservations, partly because I question whether or not I will be able to make a difference.  I have had a few restless dreams about past situations where I was expected to do things without having the resources I needed ( Read more... )

that's crazy. Every place where there are more than 1 people able to do the job (like 2 pediatricians at one office), they always rotate the "on call" situation. I am really surprised that they didn't take your idea about the rotation seriously. What a way to wear off people who work for you for no good reason.

Yeah I don't really understand the hangup on that. I know that's the reason people have left our group or gone to other companies.

BTW, the review didn't happen. We had a client emergency and I worked from 7:20am - 10::00pm. I guess it will happen next week.

People do things that are not so logical (like refusing to look into the rotation). The decision making often boils down to emotions that are hard to explain : )))

Btw, allowing to work from home is really a perk to the company too. Many people who work from home tend to work more because they don't have to drive and to socialize with co-workers. I may have really worked 5-6 hours a day when I worked at my last job (some co-worker would always pop into the cubicle to chat about this and that.. and then trying to get back to what you were doing after losing your focus).

So I don't understand why more companies don't allow people in our industry to work from home more.

I was thinking about you. I am kinda glad you got a reprieve on the review so you have more time to figure out your heart. Don't act unless you feel absolutely certain. I worry about you working as much as you do already & can only imagine a promotion would set the stage for some crazy-making!

And we're WAY overdue for a lunch/dinner/drinks date.

If you're anxious, you may have legitimate reason to be so. If your current position is already stressing you and/or wearing you down, taking on more responsibility has the potential to make it worse.

My own experience in being in a situation with "responsibility" is to make absolutely sure you have the support of the people you're working with, and the resources. If your team is starting to suffer under present working conditions, and you are forced to lead using a policy you don't agree with, this responsibility will inevitably be stressful.

But if you're given leeway to implement your ideas, the stress you experience will be in the name of improving things, and I consider that a good kind of stress.

I agree completely. That will be the main thing I am looking for when we have the meeting about the new position. I think there is potential for this team to be the one everyone wants to be on. But it is not that now and some things would have to change to get it to where I think it could be. We'll see....
