Those familiar with the doctrine of
American exceptionalism need not look further than the ideas and policies of our current president. Now it seems we have a presidential front-runner that is vowing to uphold and continue George W. Bush's foreign policy, despite the fact that it has been nothing short of an anemic fuckfest of a disaster.
"Let me make this clear: there are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al-Qaida leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will." (

The ignorance and naiveté of this statement is astounding. This rhetoric is identical to that connoted by our president and his administration in the months before invading Iraq. I mean, what is President Obama going to do after he goes into Pakistan, deposes Musharraf, and hunts down the terrorists? Establish military bases? Build a huge fucking embassy? Leave the nation in turmoil while hatred for America festers within? Obama has worn his opposition to the war in Iraq like a badge of honor, yet he would gladly create an identical situation in Pakistan.
Obama also advocates the enlargement and aggrandizement of our already bloated and over-used military. The United States already spends roughly as much on defense as the rest of the world combined. Obama wold have us spend even more with an additional "65,000 soldiers to the Army and 27,000 Marines." But what are these additional forces for? He explains, "the war in Afghanistan and the ill-advised invasion of Iraq have clearly demonstrated the consequences of underestimating the number of troops required to fight two wars and defend our homeland." So these additional troops would be used to defend our homeland and wage three wars -- concurrently.
Hey, I have an idea. What about a peaceable solution? Simply put: restrain the impulse to use physical force in the sovereign affairs of others. Stop interfering in other people's shit and they won't hate us so much that they want to blow us to smithereens. If America pulled out of Saudi Arabia after the first Gulf War, Osama bin Laden wouldn't hate us, there would have been no 9/11, and today Obama would be talking out of his ass about something else entirely.
Whether or not he really means what he says, Barack Obama is touting himself as an American exceptionalist. If his actions aligned with his rhetoric, he would continue our President's policy of American Imperialism. He would use American power to first threat and bully other nations to concede to our will. He would then use military force to purge sovereign nations of their right of self-determination. He is not the man who will set America on a peaceable course of diplomacy, nor is he the man that this nation needs to lead us out of the wallowing drudgery of imperialism that George W. Bush has gotten us into.
