So, I feel like I can't claim myself as a quality musical theatre homosexual right now...

Only this weekend did I finally see RENT--the movie based on the Broadway smash that opened my freshman year of high school and continues to run today.  That's ten years!  I remember loving the original production so much merely because of the original cast.  ( Read more... )

Oh Matty. I agree with you for the most part. I find it irritating that The Producers was so well received by the critics and there were Golden Globe nominations and such for it because I thought Rent was just as good (meaning - it was pretty okay). I just have to say that I looooove Jessie L. Martin. His scenes make me laugh and cry and listening to the soundtrack when he sings usually always reduces me to tears.

So that's it from the Critic's Corner. Thank you and good night.

Well, I'm glad you didn't leave the theatre weeping for the time and money you'd never get back, like I did. I think you can get away with lack of subtlety in satire and farce like The Producers easier than you can in a political melodrama like Rent. Mind you, I didn't love The Producers, but it also didn't make me want to beat the crap outa the director with my personal sledgehammer I've named Ham-Fisted.
