I was at work downtown. TO was chaotic, let me tell you. Firstly, not only did we lose power in our building, but the emergency backup died about 20 minutes after the power went out (faulty cooling system or something), so we had no ventilation, and the stairwells were pitch black. Crazy, eh? So we had to walk down the stairs (luckily I'm only on the 5th floor), and I happened to have a flashlight given to me by the assistant to the CEO - they had some extra lying around from something, so I got to be the hero for a bunch of people trying to make their way downstairs in the dark. And I mean, complete darkness. I would have used the backlight on my Palm Pilot if I didn't have the flashlight, but the flashlight was much more useful. Anyway, I made my way to Union Station, trying to get a hold of J all the way, and my friend that lives downtown as well. Couldn't get a hold of her, and finally got a hold of J. I was boarding a ferry from Nova Scotia to PEI. We tried to call my sister on her cell but it wouldn't go through. We figured it was off or busy or something. Then we camped overnight in PEI. The next morning on our drive to Charlottetown we heard on the radio, "And the power is still off in most of Ontario. Large parts of the eastern United States are also affected. We, are not. Now, on to sports..."
I was in Frankford entertaining guests when we noticed that the ceiling fan had stopped and the UPS on Joan's computer was beeping.
After out guests left, we had a cold supper and Joan went to bed.
I walked out onto the quiet street and looked up at the stars. The Milky Way was quite visible. I ended up giving an impromptu astronomy talk to the neighbours.
