Re: Hipness

1. Has anyone ever considered that the reason hipsters deny their hip status is because it's not a very nice word? It carries some pretty negative connotations; why would anyone be eager to place that much-loathed title upon themselves?

2. Why do we hate these people anyways?

You're right - hipsters - or those people label as hipsters - generally don't wear it as a badge of pride. I think, at least partly, because when it's uttered it's usually - not always, mind - in a cutting fashion. Personally, I've never been called a hipster but I have been called "indie" and that has bothered me, though I can't quite say why. It just kind of grates. Hipster is similar I guess.

As to why the collective "we" dislikes the hip - no idea. Seriously - no idea.

Mm. When I've been called indie, it frustrates me because it's kind of... It's like a forced segregation from normal society? (and there is a better word, but I just woke up)
I listen to a few bands who're lesser known. I do not give a rat's ass about indie fashion or film or whatever.
And then people go and say "Oh, no, sorry. You're one of them" it's a little bit offputting.

I think the reason so many people-myself included, I'll admit-dislike hipsters is because of their judgmental attitude towards people who aren't concerned with trivial bullshit like music taste, clothing style, and whether said clothing is ironic or not. They're trying ridiculously hard to defy a society that's already taken the trendy aspect of their lifestyles and made it a fashion statement. Really, they're not defying anything, and it's annoying when people try to act edgy by reading Nylon and ripping their tights.

Unfortunately, not every cute waif can become a photographer, a musician, a model, or a painter's ~*exotic*~ muse. Sure, many of these kids have enough money to fund their dreams and shop at American Apparel on a weekly basis, but the special snowflake complex is deeply ingrained within many of them.

I admit, I've had... Very little contact with these people. In fact, I do not believe I have ever met a single person who has properly fit was is the description of a hipster.

And so, I cannot help but wonder if these people even actually exist. Those are such illogical goals and aims-- thought processes-- that I cannot sincerely believe that we've interpreted these people correctly.

I mean, urbandictionary told me they generally claim to hate hipsters. If this is the case, then where exactly is the line between 'them' and this collective 'we'?

Maybe all they need is love?
