Alright!! Rewatch time. It took me a bit to get into the grove of doing everything at once...I have to:
A)Take notes for timeline
B)Take notes for my thoughts
C)Take notes/screen shots for If Clothes Could Talk series.

In the rewatch posts though, I'll only be sharing my thoughts. If Clothes Could Talk, and the Timeline will be updated after I've ( Read more... )

Wow. I really love your insights. I haven't seen these episodes in a while, but I think I agree with everything you said. Except where you said Sam and Dean were always unequal partners. I think in the latter half of season 2 Sam and Dean were really working together well and were actually happy and trusted each other-there was the fear of Sam turning 'evil', but they were dealing okay. Of course things didn't turn out well, and Dean made a deal, but I think it's partially timing (thier father died not long ago) and that Dean felt that he really didn't deserve to have this time living because someone else had been 'sacrificed' for him to live twice already when he thinks he should have died. So he thought he could sacrifice his own life for Sam to live his. Oh, I could go on (but I have to get to class). I hope I made sense. I always try to analyze the boys. They are so messed up, but love each other so much, too...

Hm, I agree with you, actually. Their partnership WAS more equal at the end of S2. Or at least, Sam wasn't complaining that much about the way things were. I don't think it was perfect, but it seemed livable. The problem is that once you get to S3, Sam starts feeling helpless to save Dean - and Dean keep refusing his help, which makes him feel more helpless...and then when Dean comes back from hell, they are both having this huge tug-of-war for control of the relationship as a result. Where Sam thinks he needs to protect Dean, and Dean resents Sam's new independent streak because from what he can see nothing good can come of the decisions Sam is making, so he tries to tighten Sam reigns - and as any parent knows (I think) tightening the reigns only ever makes things worse.

I think you're right about this and the changing dynamic between the brothers. I would argue that they were actually partners in the truest sense of the word by disk 4 of season 1, but Dean's deal really did kill the equality in their relationship. Amonitrate has some lovely meta about the characters' respective roles the Winchester family dysfunction which really effected how I've viewed the story.

Thanks for the meta rec! I will check it out when I get the time! I love a good meta :)

And yes, you are right about disc 4 of s1...well, I'd argue disc 5. S1 was really a very complete arc, despite the incomplete ending - because they didn't know if they were being renewed or not, so they brought Sam and Dean to an emotional conclusion - where they understood each other.

Have I said how much I love to read your observations? Because I really do!

Have you done this rewatch thing for other seasons? What's the easiest way to find them on your journal?
