I have not rewatched this recently, but I remember my original reaction was mixed to this. The montage was perfectly intercut. The Sam portion of the episode really moved his character along.
The Dean and Cas show, though, fell flat for me. It would have seemed more organic for Dean to take Cas to a bar and pick up a girl there than go to a bordello. And the fire in the hospital was too unrealistic to believe.
And honestly, Cas set this up as it was going to be the end of him to summon Raphael and yet I never felt Cas was in danger because they had Rafe in the holy fire--so what was the big deal?
However, Dean's declarations that he was happy now--the way Jensen delivered that line, Dean was definitely trying to convince himself he was happy. Because he really wasn't.
And yes, I agree with you. It was an extremely well acted and character driven storyline for Sam, whereas Dean and Cas were really the comic relief of the episode - even with the supposedly serious task of trapping an archangel. And I agree, you never really got the sense that Cas was in that much danger.
That being said, I DO understand why Dean brought Cas to a brothel instead of a bar - he needed a sure thing. Not only is it extremely hard to pick someone up on behalf of your friend - it's even harder to get that person to sleep with your friend when your friend is socially inept. So, yeah, when in doubt, throw money at the problem.
But yeah, what you really got with this episode was: Sam: SERIOUS HEARTWRENCHING STORYLINE Dean: It's the new Odd Couple! Stay tuned for wacky hijinks!
The main thing that I disliked about that episode was the bordello scenes. While some of the dialog was snappy and cute, the environment just seemed so fake. While my knowledge of bordellos is somewhat scanty, just based on TV shows, the one on Supernatural just seemed too sanitary and formal. Of course, when anything seems too unreal on SPN, I remind myself that I'm watching a show with vampires, ghouls, demons, ghosts, etc.
You'd be surprised. I think Dean brought Cas to a classy place. Brothels are a business like any other - the ones that are actually legal (which, I DON'T believe would be in Maine, but whatever) have really strict sanitation practices.
But yeah, I've never been to a brothel in Maine. We'll just have to believe that in the Supernatural-Universe, Maine is sex-worker friendly and whoever runs that brothel knows how to attract the right clientèle. After all, if you run a filthy place, it's going to be frequented by filthy people. If you run an expensive clean place, it'll be frequented by fastidiousness rich people. If I were a sex-worker, I'd know which clients I would prefer ;)

I'm glad it wasn't just me thinking it didn't feel that dangerous for Cas.
And your summary?
Perfect.
