Rewatch S5: Fallen Idols (5x03)
Oh no guys! Jensen used up all the Awesome for 5x04 and now all we have left in stock is Mediocre!
I kid because I love...now, on with the show:
FALLEN IDOLS
Confession: I totally skipped rewatching the opening teaser death...because it is gross enough the second and third time we see it in the episode.
Plus, sometimes I forget I'm doing a rewatch and I start watching an episode like the clothes are the only things that matter. Speaking of which, Sam wears one of my favorite plaid shirts in this episode! Also, he briefly wears the shirt that Jared wore to VanCon2009. Jared is so hilarious, because I know they were filming this episode at the time - so he probably just walked off set in Sam's clothes on Saturday morning (Fraterday!) and then wore them to the Con on Sunday. Get your own clothes Jared! (or don't - I kind of think it's hilarious and adorable that you steal your character's clothes.)
"So, what's with this job?"
-Ooo...never a good line to open an episode with. Not to criticize right out of the gate, but justifying your writing before it even starts? Not a good sign.
They've been looking for the colt for 3 weeks already. I think this is how the conversation in the diner in Mystery Spot originally started too...deja vu. They really have to stop losing the colt. Every time they do, they waste 3 weeks looking for it before giving up and taking a random job. This tells us that the Winchesters only have a 3 week attention span.
"This is what we're doing, ok! End of discussion!"
-Dean reminds me of my own older brother sometimes. My older brother once "End of Discussion!"ed my MUM...and IT WORKED! Truly, he has super powers.
Dean softens the blow by explaining himself though - saying they need to put the training wheels on. And Sam automatically gets defensive and insulted - because I think that's sort of Sam's default position. He's a little self-centred, our Sammy, and often thinks everything has to do with him...it's almost like he's got some sort of dark destiny and his brother was raised for the sole purpose of being his guardian...almost...
But Dean explains further and says the training wheels are for "you and me, us, a team" and that "I really want this to be a fresh start, you know? For the both of us." - I'll come back to this line later.
Then we get the inept Sheriff! It's a popular comedy bit for a reason...and the Sheriff in this episode is only there for comic relief. That being said, anyone who reads my rewatches and quick reactions knows that I love the slow progression of how Sam and Dean deal with the law. In the beginning, they were nervously acting their way through each encounter. Putting on a show. Over the years though, they actually deal with the local police department with an air of greater authority, and it doesn't even seem like they are acting anymore. They are so at ease with their roles. I'm not sure I explained that right, but I suppose it doesn't really matter.
The car...I like Sam's "you want me to do it?" when Dean is looking at the car all scared...it reminded me of Sam in the airport in Phantom Traveler offering to go on the plane alone.
"Need a flashlight!?"
-Ah haha...Sam, awww. I know you are going to give Dean a big speech later about how you don't want to be treated like his kid brother anymore, but that was such a kid brother move you just pulled...especially with your innocent-helpful face, and then your "why is he telling me to go away" disappointedly confused face.
Dean, why don't you just write down the number? Or dictate it to Sam...it is easy to read. Why do the rubbing? This doesn't make sense.
"That's a lot of research!"
"Well, I guess, I just made your afternoon"
-Uh oh, Dean has forgotten that Sam's love for research is mostly fanon. Sam does the research because you tell him to Dean, it doesn't mean that he likes it!
Ok, picking up girls by pretending to be a Hollywood agent is totally squeezy, even for Dean.

Ok, here's the bit that I don't really like in this episode, because I think it's out of character:
Dean on the phone: "Maybe the apocalypse has got them all hot and bothered...yeah, well we all know whose fault that is...well I'm sorry but it's true."
-The only way I can explain this away is by changing what Dean was implying from what Sam thought he was implying. Let's rewrite it so that we have Dean's imagined thoughts and Bobby's possible responses: "..yeah, well we all know whose fault that is [OURS]...[Bobby: Don't be so hard on yourself...]...well, I'm sorry, but it's true."
Because I really don't like the thought that Dean is blaming Sam for the apocalypse. Dean was fine with the whole kill-Lilith plan and only found out that she was the final seal SECONDS/MINUTES/WHATEVER before Sam did. In the first episode, Dean didn't care about the apocalypse, all he cared about was that his brother had BETRAYED HIM by going off with a demon AFTER STRANGLING DEAN. I'm not saying that Dean isn't entitled to his anger, and isn't entitled to be keeping Sam on double-secret probation...but I think the writers temporarily forgot WHY Dean was mad at Sam. So yeah, it irks me.
"So, I'm just supposed to pretend I didn't hear what I just heard?"
"Pretend of don't pretend, whatever floats your boat."
-Thanks Dean. I'm going to pretend.
"This was supposed to be a fresh start, Dean."
"Well, this is about as fresh as it gets."
-Again, Dean could be referring to the fact that they can't really ignore the fact that angels want to ride them and that it's the apocalypse...yup, still pretending, because Dean gave me permission to.
The Sam staring at Abe Lincoln moment is awesome. It's the kind of suspense/horror I like - like we had in Scarecrow with "dude, you fugly"
"He was a fruitarian"
"Let me get this straight. Your ultimate hero was not only a short man in diapers, but he was also a fruitarian?"
"That's not the point."
"That is good...even for your that is good."
-Personally, I love the fact that Sam is like the least-likely person ever to go darkside...besides his anger-issues and tendency to become a crazy person whenever his brother dies.
Now let me write out an entire scene, because it's these sorts of scenes that save this episode:
"You ain't steering this boat. Let's go, chop chop."
"You know, this isn't going work."
"What isn't?"
"Us. You, me, together. I thought it could but it can't."
-I'm having flashbacks to people breaking up with me...
"You're the one who wanted back in, Chief."
-Chief?! Hahaha...oh Dean, please be calling Sam more weird pet-names.
"And you're the one who called me back in."
"I still think we've got some trust building to do."
-Guys, Dean really does watch Oprah. But hey, at least they are bringing it back to the REAL issue for Dean.
"How long am I going to be on double-secret probation?"
"'Til I say so"
"Look, I know what I did - what I've done - and I'm trying to dig myself out of that hole, I am, but you're not making it any easier."
-This is where I fail in fanfic...the boys have a very particular way of talking, especially Sam. The repeating of the subject and the verb is a great example. When trying to explain himself, Sam always repeats "I+main verb" at the end of his sentences...like a strange Yoda.
"So what? I'm just supposed to let you off the hook?"
"No, you can think whatever you want. I deserve it and worse. Hell, you'll never punish me as much as I'm punishing myself, but the point is: if we're going to be a team - you and I - it has to be a two way street."
-Aw, Sam. You deserve hugs, because you really are harder on yourself than anyone.
"So we just go back to the way we were before?"
"No, because we were never that way before. Before didn't work. How do you think we got here?"
-I think I said it in an episode before - but Sam is all about the psychological introspection this season. I think this is a fundamental difference between him and Dean. Dean recognizes the fact that he is severely messed up, but he doesn't really think too hard on WHY. He sees the problems, and then he continues with his life without really ADDRESSING the problems. Sam, on the other hand, thinks 'wow, I'm really messed up right now, how did this happen? how can I fix this? what can I do differently?' I don't think Dean HAS considered how they got to where they are...or if he did, the evaluation probably ended with "it was that bitch Ruby and that goddamn demon-blood addiction of Sam's! Well, those are gone, PROBLEM SOLVED."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Dean, one of the reasons I went off with Ruby was to get away from you."
"What?"
-Hey Sam, how about you totally confirm all of Dean's abandonment issues? I think that would be a good idea - it'll totally put him in a great place to trust you again, don't you think? /sarcasm.
"It made me feel strong - like I wasn't your kid brother."
-It made you feel like you had control over your own destiny, Sam.
"Are you saying this is my fault?"
"No, it's my fault. All I'm saying is that if we're going to do this. We have to do it different. We can't just fall into the same rut."
-This is why I like this show, because the characters CHANGE. I know a lot of people are like "bring back S1 Sam and Dean, they were happy-go-lucky and full of piss and vinegar!" But personally, if I were watching a show where the core relationship that drove the show NEVER EVOLVED OR CHANGED...well, I wouldn't be watching that show, would I.
"What do you want me to do?"
"You're going to have to let me grow up for starters"
-Dean is SO SAM'S MOTHER! Seriously...this is a child complaint to a parent, not a sibling complaint to an older sibling.
Ok, end of scene.
"Paris Hilton's not dead as far as we know, right?"
"Pretty sure, no"
"So it's not a-"
"Ghost, no"
"So either Paris Hilton's a homicidal manic or-"
"or we missed something."
-I love how they follow up a "our relationship is not equal and everything is shit between us" conversation with a conversation where Sam is finishing all of Dean's sentences."
Autopsy!Sam
Ugh! The noises! SO GROSS
-Seriously though, this is another progression in the show that I love...the fact that Sam went from almost vomiting in S2 autopsies, to looking really grossed out in S4 autopsies, to looking mildly disgusted while he preformed the autopsy HIMSELF in this episode...to merrily sawing off the top of a guy's head and delightedly showing Dean the shrunken brain in an autopsy still to come.
"There not like any seed I've ever seen before, Dean!"
"Wow, just when I thought you couldn't get any geekier"
-I love the amused affectionate smile Dean gives Sam with that line...and Sam's all like "don't make fun...mmm...seeds are so puzzling!"
Sam says yahtzee! It's a Dean phrase being used by Sam.
They don't hang from trees well. Sorry, Jensen and Jared or whoever was directing you...but your necks aren't loose enough to be realistic, unless you both have severe neck muscle problems.
Talkative Monster Number 6 and then...
"I'm not exactly Mr. Innocent in this whole mess. I did break the first seal."
"You didn't know"
"And neither did you. I mean, I'm not saying demon blood was a good way to go, but you did kill Lilith"
"And started the apocalypse"
"Which neither of us saw coming. I mean, who'd have thought killing Lilith would be a bad thing? Point is: I was so concerned about watching your every move that I didn't see what it was actually doing to you. So for that I'm sorry."
Ok, remember I said I'd come back to the "a fresh start for both of us" line? And how I didn't like the bit where it sounded like Dean was blaming Sam for the apocalypse? I think Dean totally blames both of them - the fact that BOTH Sam and Dean lost sight of what was important last season. Dean, because he was so hung up on whether or not he could trust Sam not to use his freaky powers or go darkside, that he didn't realize that Sam was being manipulated and led down the garden path (or whatever that phrase is), and Sam because he wanted to prove to Dean that he was strong and an adult and could make good decisions, that he didn't realize he was sort of dong the opposite. It's like kids who want to prove to their parents that they can be self-sufficient, so they become drug-dealers because that's where the money's at (....seriously, that's where the money's at, kids.)
Plus, you know, Dean totally did break the first seal, and it's not like he just FORGOT about that. He was dealing with the whole "holy crap, I became a torturing evil person in hell" all last season, not to mention the whole "I've failed my father and I truly am a disappointment to everyone who loves me and the entire human race" thing...so, yeah, "a fresh start" would be nice for Dean too, and I think he knows it. I think that's what he meant by that line - that not only did he want to give Sam a fresh start at earning Dean's trust, but he wanted to give himself a fresh start at not disappointing Sam/being a horrible person.
So, yeah, anyway...Sam drives them away in the Impala and we all live happily ever after...
