Rewatch S5: Abandon All Hope (5x10)
I must admit, part of me was putting off watching this again...but, here we go...
You can see the skytrain track in the beginning...it's there beside the highway. Very Vancouver...but, them, I guess if you don't live here, you don't necessarily know what those look like.
Is it just me, or is Crowley kind of ...really good looking. I think I might have a small crush on Mark Sheppard, people.
But I'm getting off topic...this is the first time we're introduced to Crowley. Not only is he attractive, he's intelligent and biting, and oddly enough - more open minded and accepting than most people. I like how he makes the homophobic douchebag kiss him instead of the pretty girl.
"Even as we speak, it's...going...down."
"Going down? Ok Huggybear..."
-Hahaha, Cas. You make an awesome spy.
But Cas has limitations...he can't get past the Enochian warding magic. It makes me wonder if the Cas of 2014, or the Cas of 5x18-5x22, wouldn't have been affected by Enochian warding magic at all.
It's nice to see Jo again. I liked the cliched ruse to get inside the mansion gates. I also like Crowley calling Sam and Dean "the Hardy boys"...my brother used to read those books when we were young.
"I forgot you two were, at best, functional morons"

This is what I like about Crowley though, he's very intelligent. He's not fooled by Lucifer's aura of command over hell...he's got no illusions of what the apocalypse would mean for him. He knows his place, and he knows how to keep his place (or perhaps improve it). After all, he's "in sales, dammit!" - if Lucifer wipes out humanity, whose left to make deals?
Crowley tells them that Lucifer will be in Carthage on Thursday, and Sam tries to kill him, only to find the gun empty. And I LOVE how this whole thing is played out. How Crowley doesn't look surprised or offended. Just says "Oh yeah, right, you'll probably need some more ammunition."
"Sam Winchester having trust issues with a demon, well, better late than never."
"And thank you for your continued support."
"You're welcome"
-Personally, to me this marks Dean making peace with what Sam did in 4x21. It's only when you're able to joke about something, that you are able to move past it. I know Dean still has difficulty trusting Sam after this...which all comes to a head in 5x18...but to me this scene here tells us that Sam choosing Ruby over Dean is NOT the primary issue any more.
Ok, then Dean tries to convince Sam not to come...and we get the same trust issues. He doesn't want to hand-deliver Sam to the devil...now, whether he's envisioning Lucifer torturing Sam until he says yes, or whether he's envisioning Sam just saying yes...this COULD be a matter of not trusting Sam. Either not trusting him not to break under torture, or thinking that there might be some circumstance or argument that could get him to say yes.
What's interesting about this speech though, is the way Dean says that if he goes alone and "screw the pooch...fine, we've lost a game piece. That's a hit we can take." What game piece is he talking about? The colt? Or himself?
"Sweetheart, if this is our last night on earth, than I'm going to spend it with a little thing I call self-respect."
-I said this in my quick reaction post for this episode, but I'll repeat it: I really like the fact that Jo was a quasi-love interest that Dean never even kissed (save at the very end). That there was a depth of feeling there (and there was, even if at times it was just platonic) that was never brought to any other level. It brings a whole different dynamic to their relationship. I do see Jo as a love-interest that Dean COULD have explored, had the timing been different...(both when they first met, and when it ended).
I love seeing Cas travel from Cas's point of view..with the transition from street to window. It's very cooly done in a very low-tech way, and I love it.
Castiel is a bad liar...when he says he came there alone.
"Castiel, I'm told you came here in an automobile."
"Yes"
"What was that like?"
"Um...slow. Confining."
"What a peculiar think you are."
-The thing I love about this exchange isn't the words. It's the way Misha delivers his lines. Castiel is looking around almost as if he thinks he's been thrown into a practical joke. Here he is in front of LUCIFER, and Lucifer is making small talk about cars...think back to the other Archangel that Castiel has dealt with? You know, the one that EXPLODED HIM ON THE SPOT...and then told him God was dead all menacing like and threatened to kill him again...I really don't think Castiel expected to be trapped and CHATTED at.
Jo gets attacked, and I like how they all know right away that she's not going to make it...you can tell just by their body language and tone of voice, but they go through the motions either to bolster Jo, or just simply to live in a state of denial.
"How's she holding up"
*Sam says nothing*
-Here's an excellent example of it. This is one of the things I love best about the show...the fact that so much of their conversations are silent.
The call between Dean and Bobby on the radio is so reminiscent of Dean's call to John in Home. Such a far way we've come...back then, Dean couldn't handle something evil in their old house (mind you, he may have been afraid it was THE EVIL that killed their mother)...now, a similar call, because they're penned in by hell hounds and they're a man down.
"Bobby, it's Jo...it's pretty bad."
"Ok, now we figure what we do next"
"Bobby, I don't think she's-"
"I said, what do we do next, Dean!"
"Right, ok, right"
-I love how Bobby keeps Dean's mind focused - if not to actually win the day, but to be hold it together long enough to get out of the situation...not to panic, and not to break down.
"They keep this guy [Death] chained up in a box 600 feet under. Last time they hauled him up Noah was building a boat."
-This is interesting information.
I love the way Castiel is lit in these scenes...yes, I know, he's trapped...but that fire makes his eyes look all dark and his skin look all golden, and yeah...he is a good looking fella.
I love Jo taking charge and being realistic.
"Mom, this might literally be your last chance to treat me like an adult. You might want to take it."
-How come treating your children/siblings like adults in this show always leads to their death? Well, ok, that's not fair. Jo was dying anyway...but still. Nice shades of things to come...the fact that really Sam and Jo have the same problem with their respective guardians.
I LOVE Dean's forehead kiss to Jo...I'm such a sucker for forehead kissing. I heard somewhere that it was actually Jensen who added that in. I'm not sure if this is true, as I can't remember where i heard that...but damn, it makes me love Jensen all the more, because that forehead kiss completely breaks my heart...as does the real kiss...as does the whole scene.
"Last words?"
"I think I'm good"
"Yeah, me too"
-Personally, I like the fact that both brothers are at a point now when they don't need last words. They don't have any now, and they don't have any in 5x22. They know where they stand with each other, they know how much they mean to each other...there's absolutely no need to put it into words. To me, the fact that they don't exchange heartfelt sympathies at this point speaks to their strength of their relationship, rather than any weakness in it.
ETA: To me the most crushing part of the episode is the 10 seconds where Sam and Dean actually start to believe that they've successfully killed the devil...only to have him get back up.
There are 5 things in all creation that the Colt can't kill - I've tried to figure out how Lucifer meant this. Did he mean 5 things as in "individual things" ...the 4 archangels and God? But then, you can't kill the Horsemen either. So, is it five things as in categories of things? Archangels, Horsemen, God...what else? So much to debate here....
I love the fact that Sam runs over and we actually see him check Dean's pulse.
"All that pent-up rage..."
-I think there were some complaints that this was never followed up on. That we never found out why Lucifer needed the rage...but, personally, I think the rage allowed him to control Sam. You'll have to forgive me, because I'm going to clarify by talking about Harry Potter...if you haven't read Harry Potter and you don't want to be spoiled for the fifth book, skip the rest of this paragraph....in Order of the Phoenix, at the end. Voldemort possesses Harry. What drives Voldemort out of Harry, what ultimately defeats the possession, is Harry's ability to LOVE.
Basically, It's LOVE in 5x22 that allows Sam to defeat Lucifer (as corny as that sounds). When Sam is raging, it's easier for Lucifer to keep control of his body...it's why Lucifer decided to piss him off by showing him all the demon spies he had over the year and then letting Sam go into a rage while they tore them apart...and then when Dean shows up, and Sam sees the Impala, and Dean's promise that he's never going to leave him...it's Sam's love for Dean that allows him to push Lucifer down.
"What? They're just demons"
-Ah, Crowley...so smart. Lucifer created demons, sure...but he created them to be his personal army of expendable crew members.
"So, what can you do, you impotent sap?"
"I can do this?"
-Dude, Cas really does look like he's about to go in to kiss her...I think that's pretty cleaver, given the fact that Meg has always been pretty sexual. Think about it: She tied the boys up and molested them in Shadows...she nearly raped Jo in BUABS, and she force-kissed Dean in SFTD...she'd totally be up for some angel-action. Instead: THROWN IN A FIRE! YES!
I wonder what the heck became of her though...this is the last we ever see her.
Ok, when I first saw the picture burning, I was like "NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooo"...but then I realized, that 1)It's a symbolic Hunter's Funeral for Ellen and Jo, so awww...and 2)It's a picture not a negative. Bobby still has the negative. All is not lost.
Also, I just realized that sometime between Wednesday night and the "funeral" (Carthage happened on a Thursday), Bobby had time to develop that picture. Either Bobby has a dark room in his house, or he drove out for a rush job somewhere....or, we just don't know how much time passed between Carthage and that final scene.
And this marks the beginning of the end for Dean...well, not the end, thankfully, but it's all downhill from here for the next 8 episodes.
