Oct 21, 2010 12:43

I watched this two nights ago, but I haven't had a chance to type anything yet! But today I have no work! (yay for me, boo for my wallet)

I actually don't have that many notes for this one, so it'll be much more brief than my other rewatch reviews...

why are you guys running around with no hands? )

rewatch s5, season 5

After the epic of 5.18 I found this episode a real letdown--it didn't feel like Sam and Dean did anything proactive in it.

On the other hand, the reason I can't completely dislike it is Gabriel. The show gave him such an epic heroic opportunity and finally I fell in love with his character. Only for him to die.

Yes, the problem with 5.18 was that after a pump-us-up-speech, it was really the Gabriel story - we were just observing through the eyes of the Winchesters, as they really couldn't do anything against the pagan gods anyway...and even the beginning was them falling into a trap.

"Let's go out and get them!" *runs ten feet and gets trapped in a cage, then must wait for awesome friend to save them.* "Ok! Let's go out and get them!"

You usually express things that I feel but can't quite put words to. Yes, the problem was the the boys were observers, not participants.

Thank you for helping me clarify.

*waves* Hi, long-time lurker, first-time commenter... and not a theoretical physicist (though I do have a chemistry degree), but here's my guess re: Gabester's ability to create, based on this (non-SPN) discussion:
Going on the assumption that SPN-verse is a universe that God created, *probably* the underlying idea is either that primary matter is, like God and Death, one of those mysterious things that is uncreated and uncreatable (the Platonist/Aristotelian view) or that God alone has the power to create ex nihilo (the Judeo-Christian view). Either way, the laws of conservation of mass and energy apply; Gabriel may be able to do quite a lot of crazy things to both matter and space-time, even at the quantum level, but he can't create out of absolutely nothing. He is, as J. R. R. Tolkien puts it in "On Fairy-Stories," a sub-creator... just like humans ( ... )

Hello lurker!! Nice to meet you!

Especially since you come using awesome terms like "ex nihilo" and providing neat links!

I think that describes Gabriel well...a sub-creator. That's a cool way to think about it, and it also satisfies the primary laws of conservation of mass and energy, which I love so much.

But yes, I am probably putting far more thought into this than the wriers...but what else is new? ;)

And awesome point about Lucifer not being a creator either. :)

:D Thank you! And hey, I'm not complaining about your analysis; overthinking is an academic's prerogative. ;)

Of course, now you've got me thinking about "Mystery Spot" and "Changing Channels" as Faërian Drama... hrm....
