ha! i remember when I heard that. But, I actually as took the same mistake in Dead in the Water as Dean actually just meaning that he had talked to sam for the first two years Sam was in Stanford. Basically that Dean was with his Dad for the 3 years going on the 4th year Sam was in Stanford, but for the first 2 years, Dean actually had contact with Sam.
But I did that mostly because I seriously have trouble believing either Dean OR Sam could go 3 and something whole years (that time comes from if you consider that Sam was in the beginning of his senior fall semester at college and was only like 1 or 1 1/2 months in) without talking to each other AT ALL.
Also, supernatural makes a bunch detail oriented continuity errors. Don't get me started on how the Holy Water rules seem to make no sense. One day I will compile a list! :)
Ooo...that's a much better way to look at it. Makes way more sense in terms of characters.
I know that Supernatural is riddled with continuity errors, but I have this odd habit of trying to think up roundabout ways to reconcile them...at least the glaring ones.
Anyway, I think I'll pretend like your answer to it all is canon and say that Dean and Sam at least had Christmas/Birthday conversations for the first year that Sam was away.
I'd be very interested in seeing your list if you ever compile it ;)
