Rewatch S6: Mommy Dearest (6.19)

Oct 27, 2011 14:10

Next up, Mommy Dearest...

It occurred to me this morning that technically the clothes in Frontierland are costumes, and therefore can't go in the Clothing Catalogue. I was kind of bummed about that, even though it would save me a lot of work...so, I made an exception for the duster and Sam's white shirt. Just because I happen to really like coats, ( Read more... )

Haha, ok, your vote is noted. ;)

Maybe when I'm done cataloging the rest of the season, I'll go back and add the blanket. I certainly took the screencaps for it!

OK so I was rewatching S5 yesterday and re: our conversation about angels and Free Will;

[...]
Dean: "So who invented the Chinese Basket trick?"
Raphael: "Careful, that's my father you're talking about."
"Yeah, who would be so proud to know that his sons started the frigging apocolypse."
"Who ran off and disappeard, who left no instructions, and a world to run."
"So daddy ran away and disappeared. He didn't happen to work for the post office did he?"
"This is funny to you? You're living in a Godless universe."
"And? What you and the other kids just decided to throw and apocolypse while he's gone?"
"We're tired. We just want it to be over. We just want... paradise."
"What so God dies and makes you the boss and you think you can do whatever you want?"
"Yes. And whatever we want, we get."

And there's this moment, just before Raphael says "Yes. And whatever we want, we get" where he looks confused and lost, like part of him is going "isn't that what Free Will is ( ... )

But fundamentally, it all happens because Cas doesn't understand humans, but equally because Dean, Sam and Bobby don't understand angels.

If you actually think about it, it sometimes seems that the friendship between Cas, Sam and Dean was doomed from the beginning; because they fundamentally don’t understand one another.

This is a very interesting point. I think though, that it doesn't necessarily mean that it was doomed from the beginning - I think what happened was that both parties FORGOT that they did not understand the other. It's the assumption that they do understand that's the problem (or maybe the forgetting that they don't..either way.)

Just, he's so unused to the ability to choose that he goes for the first available option, which happens to be Crowely. And then he sticks with his decision. Because that's almost like following orders. And he knows it’s wrong, but he’s so used to doing things For The Greater Good that he thinks it’s OK. That he can handle it. But he’s already out of his depth just being an angel with ( ... )

OK so doomed from the beginning is harsh. But you’re right there is an assumption that they do understand each other. Because even we as the viewer can forget that Cas is really and truly different from humans. I remember reading somewhere on tumblr a post about how Cas would be miserable if he were to completely fall and become human - how he was miserable the one time we saw him human - and a lot of the time we judge Cas using human logic. He doesn't possess human logic! It's no surprise that we sometimes don't really understand his decisions.

But at the same time this doesn't excuse his behaviour completely, because he was with the Winchesters long enough to get an idea of asking for help, for understanding that working with a demon doesn't end well, ever. And, possibly most of all, that neither Sam, Dean nor Bobby appreciate being lied to and manipulated.

So, this time he makes the decision, and now his decision can't be wrong

I don't think this is completely true. I think he couldn't believe that his decision was wrong, ( ... )

I don't think this is completely true. I think he couldn't believe that his decision was wrong, because if he did, he wouldn't know what to do.

Right, sorry, that's what I meant - not that his decision literally can't be wrong, but that he was in denial about it.

But he did come up with the decisions, and because he was so used to following orders and not making the decisions it took him a long time to realise that 1) he was actually out of his depth 2) that he didn't really have back up like he normally would and 3) that he might have made a mistake.Yes, exactly. But, when it comes to 7x01, I also don't think that the rush of power helped any. Once someone feels god- ( ... )

Sometimes I wonder if I read your posts, go "hey that's awesome", then think "I have and idea and I will share it!" and proceed to ignore what you wrote and ramble about something completely different.

I have a feeling I do that a lot. So I'm sorry for that. But your posts are awesome. :)

Haha, that's quite alright. You've flattered my ego enough that I just assume you believe the post is awesome. ;) Plus, I love hearing your ideas! So it's okay if you forget about the rest of the post.
