Yeah, I agree with you about Dean's reaction to the 13 hour line, he was definitely a kicked puppy at the reminder...but I still think it's a good difference of characters/lives - where Sam knows the exact number of hours, and Dean probably just registers it as "soon". So, Sam's line had a duel purpose, both in pointing out the differences between the Winchester-Life and Normal-Life, and also pointing out to Dean that he is serious about making it back to the interview, that nothing has changed about what kind of life he wants to live.
Though, Sam does say that maybe he can meet up with Dean later, which I think somewhat points to the idea that Sam might have considered hunting on the side, if his Dad hadn't just told him to "stay gone." - but that's a whole other debate.

Before I started watching Season 1, I only knew excerpts from the later seasons - you're right, they seem ridiculously young here. With Sam it's mostly the lack of muscle mass, with Dean the voice.
