When Jack reappeared at the end of the last episode (15.11) and Cas hugs him in the church after rescuing him--I thought for a moment that would be Cas' happy moment where the Empty claims him! But apparently that Cas wasn't happy enough for the Empty right then?
I think because they still have the looming problem of God, that Cas can't be truly happy to the point where he forgets about all his worries - which is exactly when the Empty wants to take him. So, I think Cas' death is more of a problem to worry about for the finale of the series (assuming that they actually defeat Chuck.)
