First off: Not in the slightest surprised that "book 12" of the Wheel of Time is actually books 12-14. You're not going to read them at all, though? We decided not to buy book 11 until the series was finished, and we may still hold to that decision, but I kinda figured we'd get them eventually. We've been holding shelf space for them for 10 years

I have been reading stuff by the "new guy" and its pretty interesting. I think that when I read the first book, I didn't realize he was the new WoT author. I read Elantris first. It's a stand-alone *gasp*. It took me a little while to get into, but it turned out to be enjoyable enough that I tried his Mistborn trilogy. Yes, he does write long trilogies, too. But he keeps his plot fairly contained and doesn't go off into a zillion unrelated tangents. Even when he does split his main characters into different threads, it is still all related and easy to follow. Recently, I saw that he has a new book that you can actually read online. I started reading it online, and then found it interesting enough that I got it out of the library and finished it

I'm still buying them.

But I'm certainly not reading them. I stopped after Winter's Heart, although I wish I had the good sense to stop sooner. I learned my lesson after the "Mission Earth" debacle. When I see strangers on the street with, e.g., Book 5, I ask them to stop reading it for their own good.
So why buy them? All kinds of reasons. I hate trees. I need something to throw at trick-or-treaters. Etc.
I'm honestly beginning to lose hope that GRRM is ever going to finish the series. I mean, he's been doing everything under the sun except writing new aSoIaF, including rewriting the first book into a TV series. ;)
As for the Wheel of Time, honestly, I'm almost happy it's being written by someone else. I think book 11 was the only one that's reached the "Well, that didn't suck" level since... book 3? Maybe the new guy can actually write an ending as well. I can hope...
It's been a while, but I thought the first three were quite good, 4 through 6 were "pretty good," if you don't mind the crushing depression, and after that they got truly awful. I recall thinking that book 10 was better than I expected, but my expectations were very low at the time.
Yeah, that's the thing. It makes me wonder if he's just blocked or if he will never finish. Writers do get blocked, it's part of the territory, but....geez.
I still don't get why we haven't had the other half of the finished book from 4 years ago yet. Hell, if you have to leave on character out for later, and then have 12 chapters in a row where they catch up....um, do it?
