Renaissance Symposium

I went to the Renaissance Symposium this weekend in Palo Alto. Hexadamsel and I decided early on that this would be our “mini-vacation” so we splurged and got a room for Friday and Saturday night. It was really nice to be able to just hang around after the workshops and not worry about driving home. We discovered a really great pizza place ( ( Read more... )

*chuckle* NO guild is 'perfect,' but I understand your yen to make it better. You should see the angst I put my people through when they're choosing whom they wish to be and how they wish to dress and and and... But the end result is generally satisfying all the way around, so it's worth it. And the people who can't hack the pressure find someplace else to be, which is just as well.

Don't know what to suggest with the 'female' thing... It's probably NOT period, but there are so many more females working faire to begin with, and it's easier to recruit them, for the most part. Then again, your research may turn up a lot of women in the job.

Also, while a tiny township may not merit a contingent of 12 Criers, a royal entourage would... Perhaps explore that angle? Have the 'Royal Criers' come into the town with the Progress and 'take over' the local chapter, so to speak?

I'll stop attempting to be helpful here; 'tisn't my place. *grin* Glad you had a good weekend!

Her majesty probably did not bring her own criers or bellman. She had pages and heralds performing such tasks in and around the palace, London criers were their own men/women and may have tagged along, maybe not, depending on whether they thought business would be better down the road.

you rock...u know this, right???? the criers are my fave guild! if i where to ever guild, rather than belle, i would be all yours! i think my one diaversion is my lack of spontinaiety and ability to really gig. you guys do it all...you provide needed croud control, but in an entertaining way. when i have been down south, i have so missed the whimsical character yall bring to the faire. they try, but they fall far short! i think the difficulty of all faire groups is to take the enthusiasm that you feel now just starting the season, and carry it thru to northern. Workshops are awesome, and i think it great that you take the more basic ones so you can carry that back to your troupe. your dedication impresses me..... oh and btw... we miss you guys... make a trip up to Oregon sometime, damnit!!!!!!!!

The Guild of St Blaise is a combination of two trades, the criers and the bellmen (I have documentation about both trades in a box...somewhere) Female criers and bellmen ARE period as they were often husband/wife teams. Also remember that this is something of a golden age for English women where there was a CHICK on the throne, women COULD inherit and own property in their own right AND there were entire guilds of women performing 'men's work ( ... )
