Making plans (homg, honest-to-God PLANS) for going out tomorrow night. I have never gone out SOMEWHERE for New Year's Eve. This will be fabulous.
Anyway, reminded me that I haven't done this meme yet. Swiped from my cousin Karen, although I'm pretty sure I've done it once or twice before...I just can't find it.
1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
Went to job fairs. Bought classic literature on my own because I realized I MISSED it. Went to more concerts in one year than I have in all the years before, combined. Was a bridesmaid. Participated in fic exchanges.
2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions?
I can't remember if I even set any, so evidently no. =P My usual one of "get into shape" was pointless because I WAS is shape this time last year. All muscly and shit. It was awesome. Now I get to reset that resolution for '09.
3. Did anyone close to you have a child?
Nope. But there were some pretty significant bets in place.
4. What countries did you visit?
None. But I was badgered about getting a passport.
5. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Behaving around my brother's in-laws. There was so much floating in the air between both families for years before we ever met and we all managed to be adults each time we came together.
6. What was your biggest failure?
Not finding a job. I really want to kick my ass for not starting the search last year but I just wasn't ready to.
7. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Other than the usual bouts of crap-in-my-lungs/sinuses or allergies or out of sheer clumsiness? Not really. In fact, this year I finally started fixing the things that were wrong with me.
8. What was the best thing you bought?
Nintendo Wii. I don't play it all the time but I've wanted one for so damn long. And a new digital camera.
9. Where did most of your money go?
The usual- clothes, CDs, movies, books, sustenance, stuff I don't need.
10. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
My brother's wedding. To be fair, the closer we got to it, the more I was really, really, really excited for it to be over. But it well tested my Puttin'-Out-Fires Fu and my patience, and by the time the ceremony started it got around to being really fun again. The only thing about the night that didn't go according to plan (by luck or sheer willpower to make it work) was the loss of a handkerchief my great-grandmother gave me.
11. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? Happier, in general.
b) thinner or fatter? Fatter, but not by much. I'm just...squishier softer.
c) richer or poorer? Richer, thanks to working more and not fighting to pay off massive vacations.
12. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Traveling. Keeping up with friends from far away. Job hunting. Working out.
13. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Whining. Being scared of leaving my rut.
14. How will you be spending Christmas?
Ooops, was supposed to do this sooner. I spent Christmas hanging out with my parents. We didn't do a lot because Mom was on call and packing for her and Dad's mini-trip to see her parents (they're already back).
15. What was your favorite TV program?
Supernatural, Heroes, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Leverage, Lost, Project Runway, My Own Worst Enemy.
16. What was the worst book you read?
I still can't get over Atonement. I feel like I read 300 pages for nothing and watched the conclusion vanish before my eyes like a magic trick. And it's not like the 300 pages before that did much to impress me- the book put me to sleep more often than not. Even Twilight had an ending.
17. What was your favorite song of 2008?
Oh Lord, you're making me pick one? I go through albums like most people go through sections of their wardrobe- I have seasons. Beginning of the year, it was various classic rock. Then it was Whisper War. Then I was trying very hard to burn a hole in The Morning Light's EP. Lately it's been Folie a Deux. I guess if I have to pick one it'd have to be "One of Those Nights" by The Cab just because I still feel the urge to rock out when it starts up.
18. What did you want and not get?
A better job.
19. What did you want and get?
Better.
20. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
Whatever was comfortable enough to wear to work without getting in trouble for being too casual. Shoes that probably weren't appropriate for work (they had skulls on them), but I never got told anything but "so cute!" over them. Jeans and t-shirts, whatever was easiest to throw on in the morning.
21. What kept you sane?
My friends (God, Karen, it does sound trite), caffeine, chocolate, gummi bears, good books, good music, better movies, concerts and mini road-trips.
22. Who was the best new person you met?
Kelly! \o/ First time I ever talked to her she was heaping loads of help and advice on me, mainly because I was trying to do something nice for one/some of her friends. She's a sweetheart but manages to be totally honest, and also has the patience of a saint (don't you even pretend you don't, the fact that a certain someone is still breathing is proof of that).
23. Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year?
Let myself get all aggravated over people I hadn't met yet (re: question 5). I spent months being SO DAMN READY for a fight of epic proportions, and being talked down to or called out, and bristled at the thought of meeting...all for nothing. I was way too upset over things that not only didn't happen, but I shouldn't have worried about in the first place.
24. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
Fixing some things doesn't fix everything. You can make things better for yourself when you need to, but you're still going to have to work harder afterward. And you can't be discouraged by that. If you have to fight, then fight. Don't give up or you'll miss your chance.
25. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need...
-danke One Republic, you cheesy bastards
26: What are your plans for 2009?
Hopefully go meet Kelly face-to-face in February (fingers crossed!). Get my hair styled. Find a job. Move into my own place (and if I share with Beth, then subsequently we add on "get a dog"). Get my passport. Start taking better pictures. Learn guitar. Sing in public so my friends will stop asking me to (you'll learn). Maybe more ink if I'm a good girl. Go see the movies I want to see while they're still in theaters- especially the indies. Eat more sushi. Cook more meals. Bake for more people. Redo all my ugly layouts. Find perfect mascara. Continue with this new habit of writing like a mofo, because it is fantastic.
