I'm right with you on number one. There are a few reasons - including one time when Elissa startled my and I nearly hit her square in the nose with an elbow. I think "being startled" should be reserved for moment you DO need to react in, not for fun.
Also, classic "scary stuff", especially in movies and video games, is SO predictable. I walked through half of Doom 3 going "enter room, fake out, fake/small monster, fakeout, real monster, cha-cha-cha" and pegging it almost perfectly. Squall, a gaming buddy has me trying out a game called Dead Space, and it's the same thing. I can tell from the level maps where I'm certain to fight.
