For The Cult, I would choose Sonic Temple. It is a staple in any collection. For Killing Joke, either one of the self-titled, and KJ are technically punk.
VAST and Transmission were great albums.
Might I be so bold as to add Simple Minds: Graffiti Soul to the list. Best album they've done in years.
I considered Sonic Temple because it contains their biggest hits or Electric because it had the most hits, but couldn't decide. So I went with the hits collection. I ran into the same problem with Killing Joke's self-titleds, hence I also went with a hits collection there too.
About Killing Joke being punk, that's true they do have punk in their sound. Though I always felt post-punk was better for them because they followed punk rock historically and their sound was so much more than the stripped-down nature of punk.
