Oh, I like this. You've shown a short of bruised pride in her, but she isn't quite broken. Her memories of the ale and water mixing are really visual and beautiful.
I also love Miranda Jones sneaking in at the end. They could have one heck of a conversation.
ILU. I liked that you referenced Diane Duane's novels, too. I love her take on the Rihannsu. But back to your story, XP. Your visual descriptions were lovely, but the descriptions of the atmosphere struck me more. The idea of this place perceived so undesirable that none of the three powers would claim it, but that it is rather more a matter of one's attitude how one would see it. Charvanek was a character with so many possibilities, and her story was left so open-ended by canon, but I think you've done her justice and written a lovely ficlet with rich details.
I think I was most pleased with myself for coming up with the setting, actually, and the line about a place so unimportant that no one wants it, so I'm really glad you liked that!
