Latent Violence

In Chicago the daily recurring news: murdered wives/girlfriends/exwives/ex girlfriends, hit-and-runs, gang violence, and on and on. None of the natives around me registered it as apalling. Sometimes I would hear the time-honored "she deserved it" (that always got me in my scolding mood).

My bike rides around the Twin Cities have been so... innoccuous. A friend once told me that Chicago had a bad aura - I didn't know then what she meant. She meant that pervasive and unrelenting insecurity, the realistic threat I used to feel, even in my own apartment.
